Obama: 'I Meant What I Said' on War, Veterans' Care

FORT BLISS - President Obama told several hundred troops with the 1st Armored Division here that he kept his promises as commander in chief during the past three and a half years, ending the war in Iraq, drawing down forces in Afghanistan and redoubling care for returning veterans.

His record, he said, was proof that he can be trusted at the helm for four more years.

"I told the American people that all our troops would be out of Iraq by the end of [2011]," Obama said. "At the time I know some folks didn't believe me. They were skeptical. Some thought the end of combat was just word games and semantics. But I meant what I said."

"Two years ago I also told you that we'd keep up the fight in Afghanistan," he said. "I've got to tell you the truth. This is still a very tough fight?. Just as in Iraq, we are going to end this war responsibly."

The message, coming on the heels of the Republican National Convention and exactly two years after the U.S. ended combat operations in Iraq, was as much an appeal to war-weary voters as it was to the troops he leads. Both constituencies are seen as key voting blocs by Obama's re-election campaign.

As Obama spoke, his top aides pointed out that campaign rival Mitt Romney made no mention of war - or the troops - in his prime time convention address on Thursday night. It was the first time since 1952 that a Republican nominee failed to mention war, even as the U.S. remains engaged in its longest, according to a review of historical transcripts by the Associated Press.

"In an almost 45-minute speech, Romney didn't find a moment to mention our troops in Afghanistan or how we're providing for our veterans when they return home," said senior Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod. "So American people last night didn't get any straight answers from Mitt Romney. They got nothing but evasion, distraction and insults."

White House press secretary Jay Carney said that he was "surprised" that Romney failed to "mention the 70,000 men and women who are serving in Afghanistan, executing a mission that is profoundly important to America's national security in a conflict that was the direct result of an attack on the United States by al Qaeda."

Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams noted that on Wednesday the governor addressed the American Legion national convention, a group whose invitation Obama declined.

"The Obama campaign's attack on Governor Romney today is another attempt to politicize the war in Afghanistan, a war in which President Obama has dangerously based his decisions on political calculations, endangering our mission," Williams said.

Polls show dwindling public support for the Afghanistan war, with 66 percent of voters in a May AP-GfK poll saying the U.S. should not be involved in the conflict anymore. Only 37 percent of Republicans supported continuing war operations in Afghanistan, the poll found.

Obama has implemented a timetable for U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, with all American troops set to be out of the country by 2014.

The president last visited Ft. Bliss two years ago - Aug. 31, 2010 - to announce the end of the U.S. combat mission in Iraq. Sixteen months later the final U.S. troops withdrew from that country after nearly a decade of war. Nearly 4,500 Americans died in the Iraq War, including 198 from the 1st Armored Division based at Fort Bliss.

"When I was here last I made you a pledge. I said that as president, I will insist that America serves you and your families as well as you've served us," Obama told the troops. "And there again, I meant what I said."

Earlier Friday, Obama signed an executive order to expand mental health services and suicide prevention efforts for veterans and military families.

"I know that you join me in saying to everyone who's ever worn the uniform, If you're hurting, it's not a sign of weakness to seek help. It's a sign of strength," he said.

One Small Thing: Get Moving to Reduce Migraines

Here?s one small thing you can do today for better health: Reduce the frequency of migraines by getting some exercise, says neurologist Dr. Lee Peterlin, director of Johns Hopkins headache research.

Why you need to do it: While medications can greatly reduce the incidence of migraines, they don?t always work. Some drugs have side effects, and not everyone wants to take them. Exercise can be a low-cost, non-invasive effective treatment.

A 2011?study?in the journal Cephalagia found that among a group of migraine sufferers, moderate weekly exercise worked as well as the migraine drug topiramate and relaxation exercises in reducing migraine rates.

MORE: One Small Thing: Cut Back on Mutlitasking and Improve Your Memory

Other studies, Peterlin says, have linked obesity with a higher risk of migraines, as well as weight loss in obese people with a reduction in migraines. Some research suggests an association between a sedentary lifestyle and an increase in headaches.

The connection? Obesity contributes to inflammation, which may play a role in migraines as well. Exercise has been shown in some studies to be effective in tamping down inflammation in the body.

What you can do: Moderate amounts of aerobic activity can make a difference, Peterlin says, so don?t worry about having to train for an Ironman triathlon. Doing something?taking a brisk walk several times a week?is better than nothing, but she suggests striving for the government recommendation of being active for 150 minutes a week (basically a half-hour a day, five days a week).

?Eat a healthy diet, get moving and avoid excessive weight gain,? she says. ?There are things you can do without your doctor, or sometimes in addition to what your doctor recommends.?

Do you suffer from migraines or bad headaches? What are your remedies? Let us know in the comments.

Feds to limit forest drop-off of ATVs, snowmobiles, mountain bikes ...

I thought this article in the Denver Post was interesting. Here?s the link. Below is an excerpt.
Having been in the San Juans on vacation where ATVs were on roads and trails, and climbers used ATV?s to access trailheads, it seems to me the key thing is to keep ATV?s on roads and trails. I don?t know if renters are worse about going off roads and trails? And if there can be too many ATVs on ATV roads and trails? How would you know? And most complex of all, if you don?t restrict private, how can you know how many commercial you can have within the total limit (maybe they monitor and reset the commercial every year)? The many ways of managing being ?loved to death? is clearly a 21st century problem.

Federal land managers say they must balance commercial use with protection of public forests, which serve as watersheds and as habitat for wildlife. But this is causing conflict with people who make their living by delivering machines to increasingly savvy consumers of mountain recreation experiences.

?It?s killing me,? said Scott Wilson, owner of Colorado Backcountry Rentals. Wilson rents 20 sleds in the winter and 15 ATVs in the summer ? a business he established in 2004. His five-employee company offers to supply ?your ride? at any season in places ?where you will ride unguided through the backcountry of the Colorado Rockies.?

Now, after receiving a letter at the height of the summer season that declares him ?in violation? and orders him to ?immediately stop,? Wilson is preparing a legal challenge.

For years, he has been consulting with federal forest and highway authorities about the legality of his operations and seeking permits.

But federal rangers, corresponding with Wilson?s attorney, Lee Gelman, last week maintained their position that Colorado Backcountry Rentals? operations on Vail Pass and at the Tiger Road area in Summit County ?are not authorized activities.?

Federal foresters ?keep using the word ?unauthorized? ? and, to that, I say, ?bull,? ? said Wilson, who moved to Colorado from Texas in 2001 and serves as the linebackers coach of the Summit High football team.

?When you have thousands of people going out into forests, how do you regulate that? I get that. They are doing their job,? he said. ?But why not give me a permit? You can limit my user days.?

Restricting rentals

The mountain-bike rentals in Summit and Eagle counties are expanding by 10 percent a year, with more than a dozen companies delivering bikes and offering shuttle transport to forest trailheads, Pioneer Sports manager Jeremy Mender said. Beyond Vail Pass descents, Pioneer offers ?full-suspension mountain bikes? so that visitors can ?enjoy a variety of single-track trails? around Summit County.

?If you put a cap on that, you would be putting a cap on the whole community as far as tax revenue is concerned,? Mender said.

Restricting the trailhead rentals is complicated because federal managers of the White River National Forest, which covers 3,571 square miles, already have issued 200 permits for other commercial activities ranging from skiing to guided mushroom hunting. About 154 permits have been issued to outfitters that rent equipment and provide guides who accompany visitors.

?It makes sense to me why people would be looking at rentals,? said David Neely, the ranger in the forest?s Eagle- Holy Cross district.

But there?s a downside, Neely said, because the vehicle deliveries at trailheads ?place somebody who may never have engaged in that activity on a fairly powerful machine.?

Decision time

A decision will be be made this fall on forest commercial capacity for rented snowmobiles, Forest Service officials said. A decision on summer use of ATVs and mountain bikes will require more time, they said.

Forest officials told Wilson?s attorney they began work this summer with a university to gather data to help determine ?a summer-season commercial capacity? for areas accessible from the Vail Pass summit.

A key factor, said Rich Doak, the recreation-policy specialist for the forest, is the growing movement for ?quiet use? by limiting motorized vehicles such as ATVs.

?The quiet-use issue is popping up everywhere,? he said.

Doak said rental operations are likely to be limited, perhaps to only companies that send guides with their vehicles.

?We?re in the process of determining what the capacity is up there,? he said. ?I?m not positive that we?re going to do rental operations up there. It may be guided. It may be not at all.?

Federal data show that the numbers of visitors in Rocky Mountain forests have reached 32 million a year. The crowds are growing by about 4 percent a year, with 8.4 percent of visitors relying on ATVs or other personal motorized vehicles, said Chris Sporl, acting director of recreation, heritage and wilderness resources at Forest Service regional headquarters in Denver.

Three national forests in Colorado rank among the nation?s six busiest, Sporl said. The White River National Forest draws 9 million people a year.

Since 2005, forest managers have worked at creating sustainable designated routes for motorcycles and ATVs in forests ? trying to make sure this use is compatible with forest soils, the need to prevent erosion and other users? interests.

?One of the things we?re focusing on is restoring and adapting recreation settings. We?ve got areas that have been loved to death,? Sporl said. Future projects will restore heavily used areas ?back to where they need to be, back into balance with the ecosystems.?

?We?re constantly dealing with changing recreation opportunities over time,? he said. ?We look at how to adapt.?

Freedom to drive

Meanwhile, Wilson is trying to adapt. Last week, he dropped off a load of ATVs in mountains north of Breckenridge, along Tiger Road, for a family from Texas and two newlyweds, fresh from safety seminars and crowned with bright, shiny helmets.

Wilson sent them on their way with some trepidation. Summit County officials who oversee some land in the area have notified Wilson that they share federal land managers? concerns about unauthorized commercial ATV- and snowmobile-rental operations.

The Texans told Wilson they had previously rented ATVs for unguided riding near Durango and loved it.

The appeal, 52-year-old Jon Jobe said, ?is to have freedom to drive around and see things you want to see when you want to see it.?

As these smiling visitors rolled out on their vehicles, Wilson turned to his ringing cellphone. It was a sheriff?s deputy calling. Private-property owners nearby had complained about Wilson?s drop-offs and staging on that road. ?You gotta leave,? the deputy said.

Stone-faced, Wilson gulped.

?This could be it.?

I agree that a rototiller would be impractical for Colorado trail grooming. A SWECO dozer is much more efficient here. Permanent link to this comment Permalink Report Abuse Reply to this comment Vote this comment up Vote this comment down

I completely agree with your point, my comments had nothing to do with overall use of public land, just the reactions by many posters that the mere sight of a responsible Jeep, ATV or mountain bike user on public land is a disgrace to the outdoors.

Of course, if they?re not responsible and could care less about ripping up the high country, then to hell with them!

The problem this article is talking about isn?t the jeep or the mountain bike, or even the single ATV. Its the fact that ATV businesses have pushed multiple groups of ATVs at every trail head possible. A lot of trail heads and campgrounds look like trailer parking lots. The last time I was at the Antero trail head there were about 15 trailers that looked like they averaged 6 ATVs per trailer. Thats 90 ATVs running up and down the side of a 14er. You don?t really get a multiple use area with that kind of traffic, you get dangerous noisy conditions. tele-mon wrote:You can still rent an ATV on Vail Pass ? you just have to use a permitted outfitter! Operations like Nova Guides will even rent you an ATV or snowmobile that you can take out, unguided, and explore to your hearts content. Their contract stipulates a maximum number of people per day, or per season, which they are permitted to outfit in the Vail Pass ? Camp Hale area. They and other outfitters also do a ton of work grooming and signing the trails that they make their bread and butter off of. They?re playing by the rules and regulations, put in place to balance the interests of the businesses, other citizens using the area, and the natural ecosystems that the native plants and wildlife depend on to survive.

I have no sympathy for the rogue Texan, who moves here and sets up a drop-off rental operation, but pays no fees or offers anything constructive to help manage the area. He blocks large parking areas to stage his operation at the expense of non-commercial users. He has all the right to operate his business, but he won?t do it on private lands, because he thinks he can use the public lands we have all invested in for free.

Go back to Texas and set up your operation on public lands there. Oh wait, they don?t have any.

The could set aside a few thousand acres of dry prairie in North Texas and no one would care. You could ride around in dirt tracks as fast as your wheels would take you all day long. Social Innovations for Economic Degrowth thumbnail

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, we find ourselves in a peculiar situation: although hardly anyone would deny the deep ecological crisis facing humankind, we seem to be caught in a net of assumptions that impede a practical solution. Having acknowledged that we need to reduce consumption of energy and materials drastically,1,2 we still often think that adjustments within the current system of production and consumption will accomplish this formidable task.

At the same time, it is widely recognized that the results of the dominant approaches to solving the ecological crisis are far from satisfying. Thus, a growing community of scientists and social activists, sharing the basic insight that a reduction of energy and material use implies a reduction of gross domestic product (GDP), is gathering under the heading of sustainable degrowth.3 Degrowth obviously entails a fundamental transformation of economic structures. But what precisely are the necessary steps?

In contrast to the illusion that we can do more of the same?that is, new market or state solutions to alleviate a crisis caused by market and state solutions?it is more reasonable to start looking for a new way around this stalemate. Such paths are being explored in solidarity economics and the commons, both discussed below. These allow a shift in the trajectory of our economy from endless growth to degrowth?the voluntary reduction of energy and material use while increasing leisure and well-being.

Yet how can the paradigm of a good life for all replace the growth paradigm? What we clearly need is a great social transformation. And, in fact, we can already find social innovations that might function as the basic units of this transformation. They start from the bottom and flourish in protected spaces where shared perspectives are developed, experiments and learning take place, and links to wider power networks are forged. Two outstanding examples are the solidarity economy in Brazil and the global information commons.

The Solidarity Economy

The solidarity economy appeared in Brazil in the late 1990s as the country was hit by an economic crisis caused by the liberalization of capital markets.4,5 In the ensuing recession, many enterprises went bankrupt and poverty increased. Unemployment rose, while the prospects for reentering the formal economic sector shrank for a broad portion of society.

In this deplorable situation, a small group of socially concerned academics acted as change agents. They were engaged in a national campaign against hunger and had teaching positions at the National School for Public Health. This allowed them to support poor people?s cooperatives by creating solidarity economy incubators where cooperatives could learn to organize their workflow based on relations of equality and reciprocal support. Cooperatives were also supported in resolving the technical challenges they encountered. A considerable part of the learning process in the solidarity economy took place within incubators, in which experiences with cooperative success were assessed, shared, and further developed.

In addition, social networking between trade unions, universities, and cooperative associations strengthened the power links between this niche and the wider society and state. Finally, the solidarity economy even managed to establish a state secretariat that was instituted within the Ministry of Labor. The state secretariat further supported the cooperatives by starting a national mapping project to assess the state of solidarity economics in Brazil and allow for the specific allocation of resources and legal reforms.

Article 25

?

Like cooperatives, information commons tend to operate outside the conventional market forces of wage labor and profit. The Open Architecture Network, for example, provides free architectural and design information to anyone interested and has helped hundreds of projects worldwide, including the design and construction of these seismic-proof houses in Pakistan.

In the case of the solidarity economy, we see a radical social innovation in the making. Wage labor is replaced by self-management, which is the solidarity economy?s core innovation?and not a small one. Indeed, cooperative self-management is a precondition for ecologically responsible production. There are two reasons for this: First, it is only through self-management that production can become oriented toward concrete needs (which are limited and can be satisfied), instead of shareholder value and profit (which are unlimited, can never be fully satisfied, and thus entail growing consumption of energy and materials). Second, equal cooperation within an enterprise is a starting point for cooperation with other stakeholders and society at large, further reducing the competitive compulsion to grow. For instance, a recent study found that members of cooperative enterprises are more socially and democratically oriented than the average worker. According to the authors of this study, this trend is not the result of selectively employing people who are already socially oriented, but is rather the effect of egalitarian labor relations on individual workers.6

Thus, it is no surprise that in Brazil solidarity economy units often cooperate as networks by, for example, collectively marketing what has been produced independently. Solidarity economy chains that directly link different producers that depend on each other have been developed in some cases. The most prominent example is the textile cooperative Justa Trama.7 There, monetary income that is earned at the end of the chain is shared by all members who contributed to the production process according to their needs and living conditions. Because a solidarity economy is not primarily geared toward profits and often replaces monetary relations with direct cooperation, it does not promote growth but acts as an increasingly important safety net for people excluded from the capitalist sector.

Information Commons

Within enterprises of the solidarity economy, workers share machinery, buildings, raw materials, and products equally. Means of production, then, are commons. One might argue that, worldwide, commons are rare; they are, indeed, subordinated to market economics in most cases. However, on the level of information, they are already an important part of our daily lives. The best-known example of an information commons might be the Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia. Founded in 2001, Wikipedia has become not just a reliable but also the most important source of encyclopedic information in the world. It currently contains 21 million articles read by about 365 million users in 285 different languages.8 Unlike traditional encyclopedias, Wikipedia neither involves wage labor nor is organized by the state. Instead, a global community of voluntary, self-organized writers collectively creates Wikipedia. Its use is not restricted by the market or the state, but is open to anyone with a computer and Internet access. In this sense, Wikipedia is a perfect example of a radical social innovation that overcomes the basic structures of capitalism?markets, wage labor, and state intervention?and does not rely on material growth.

Wikipedia is only one example of a much larger group of goods in the information technology sphere that share a common feature: they are not produced on the basis of wage labor or with the primary aim of deriving profits from their sale, but on the basis of collectively organized, voluntary work. As a result, they create products that anyone can access for free without the constraints of the market. Most prominently, these include software products such as Firefox, Linux, and MeeGo, which have increasingly become serious rivals to commercial counterparts like Microsoft Internet Explorer. Beyond software, examples of information commons include projects such as Ronen Kadushin (ronen-kadushin.com), with its open furniture designs; the Open Architecture Network (openarchitecturenetwork.com); Arduino (arduino.cc), with its open electronic hardware designs; and many more. The One Laptop per Child Initiative (laptop.org) also uses an open design.

Intellectual property law provides the legal possibility of protecting the information commons from commodification through ?copyleft? licenses, the most widely used of which are the GNU General Public License for free software and diverse Creative Commons licenses for other information commons. Products that are distributed under one of these licenses are explicitly free for use, copying, and distribution, sometimes under certain conditions, such as noncommercial use and distribution. These patents therefore try to prevent what James Boyle called ?enclosing the commons of the mind.?9 The development of copyleft licenses is just one example of the complex learning processes that took place within the open-source movement.

Mondragon Corporation

?

Mondragon Corporation in the Basque Region of Spain exemplifies how even for-profit companies can function using cooperatives. Mondragon, which has nearly 85,000 employees across many industries, including solar cell manufacturing pictured here, maintains wage ratios between executives and laborers and gives every employee one vote within the company.

The success of information commons, like Wikipedia and others, indicates that, although money remains a necessity for survival in modern societies, it is not necessarily money that motivates people to create; rather, they can also be motivated by the enjoyment of creation itself, in connection with confidence in reciprocity. When someone decides to write or improve an article on Wikipedia, this person relies on compensation through thousands of complementary and additional improvements made by others at the same time. Wikipedia also shows that there is no need for central management?rather, a useful product can result from collectively organized work.

It is only one further step?and that step is not nearly so great as one might imagine?to expand the principle of commons into the realm of material technology and production, as already described in the section about solidarity economies. Recent, open-source software products include 3-D printers, such as RepRap (reprap.org), Fab@Home (fabathome.org), and MakerBot (makerbot.com), which are able to produce small plastic objects of any form, bringing the factory to the consumer. The 3-D printer RepRap is even able to produce some of its own components, making it a self-replicating machine. It is certainly questionable whether each person should be provided with his or her own small factory. Nonetheless, these are astonishing examples that show how a completely different mode of production that bypasses wage labor and markets is potentially within reach.

Such an economy without money would not be compelled to grow but could do what an economy in the Greek sense of oikonomia was originally meant to do: efficiently satisfy human needs for food, shelter, and cultural development.

How to Get to a Great Transformation

Diffusion of innovations starts when the dominant system comes into crisis. A crisis is an opportunity for a better future, a truth evident in the recent spread of solidarity economics and commons worldwide. Another reason for the acceleration of the debate on the commons is the late Elinor Ostrom?s Nobel Prize-winning work on models of organizing resource use beyond state intervention and market economics.

Cooperation is not restricted to the local, as information commons best illustrate. The Mondragon corporation in the Basque country, which employs more than 85,000 members and comprises 256 companies and bodies, of which approximately half are cooperatives, is another good example. These companies are not coordinated by monetary relations or state regulations but?within clear limitations?by democratic governance.10 Another example is the kibbutzim of the 1960s, which were characterized by complex cooperation both internally and externally within the overarching institutional network of kibbutz settlements.11

Such cooperative networks act like super-commons, linking different systems and smaller communities through collaborative decision making procedures. Insofar as those networks replace monetary relations with a direct focus on concrete human needs, they are not oriented toward profit making and thus enable degrowth. In market economies, livelihoods are bound to wage labor, which depends on profits and growth; in solidarity economies and the commons, production is determined by need only and can be voluntarily reduced. Social safety could be guaranteed by distributing products equally and by developing public infrastructures, from communal gardening and free sports facilities run by neighborhoods to open libraries. If production harms the environment, reducing it will contribute to society?s overall wellbeing, instead of exacerbating the social crisis of the growth economy.

An economy that is able to degrow can also enter a steady state of constant production and consumption with low-level, highly efficient resource use. This could fulfill the very goal that the capitalist economy increasingly fails to serve: a good life for all.

Whoa whoa whoa! Hold the phone! Square Enix wants to charge $29, or $3-$4 per episode of there soon to be released 16-bit era style RPG for iOS and Android phones and tablets! Is that even allowed??

Sure is, and apparently, there?s some hot debates going on about whether that kind of price tag for a mobile game is completely bananas, or just what the mobile games market needed. If one is to associate price with quality, then yes, certainly Dimensions would be expected to deliver a mobile game experience par excellence.

Final Fantasy Dimensions 5037b6cc96704b6585440a41

Most gamers are not used to paying any sort of price that has two digits on it for a mobile game, so asking them to pay that kind of price for a full game may seem like a lot, which is probably you can also buy it segments, so perhaps as to not seem like such a big hit to your wallet.

Granted, the game itself looks really great, and if all goes well, should very much warrant the high (by mobile game standards) price tag. We will find out soon.

Inside DARPA's 'Plan X' for cyberwar

9 hrs.

On Sept.?27, DARPA will hold a workshop to flesh out the government cyberwar strategy called ?Plan X.? The one-day workshop consists of a general access session for government employees and contractors, along with a Secret-clearance and above closed session to draw a roadmap for the future of America's cyberwar forces.?

While the next great virus won't be proposed at the Plan X workshop, the Defense Department's cyberarmy infrastructure development plans (and the sweet government contracts that go with it) will. According to the Washington Post's Ellen Nakashima, Plan X has received $110 million in funding for the next five years.

A publicly available DARPA document (PDF) says that Plan X will ?create revolutionary technologies for understanding, planning, and managing cyberwarfare in real-time, large-scale, and dynamic network environments? and ?conduct novel research into the nature of cyberwarfare and support development of fundamental strategies and tactics needed to dominate the cyber battlespace.??

In other words, Plan X will give Pentagon cybergeeks top-notch tools and research capabilities for the high-tech worms, malware, monitoring equipment, and network infrastructure hijinx that are an integral part of military capability circa 2012. DARPA, however, explicitly stated that Plan X will not fund research and development for the development of cyberweapons or vulnerability analysis.

Plan X will develop a series of futuristic tools for the Pentagon to use in cyberwar. DARPA is especially interested in the development of custom, secure operating systems and platforms for use in ?hostile network environments.? According to the document, these secure operating systems are a priority for use in battle damage monitoring, communication relays, weapon deployment, and adaptive defense. While the agency explicitly stated Plan X will not fund R&D for cyberweapons, another area of development is script development for cyberwarfare efforts, which will effectively partially automate cyberwar exercises. DARPA likens these mission scripts, which will be overseen by human operators, to the ?auto-pilot function on modern aircraft.?

The most interesting idea, however, is building giant visual maps for cyberwar. DARPA is seeking assistance in developing visual, intuitive views of large-scale cyber battlespaces for situational awareness in war games. It sounds like, if Plan X works successfully, the Pentagon will have a sweet real-time visual map of large swaths of the Internet within a decade.

"The fascinating aspect of DARPA is that it's a small, agile, forward-thinking arm of the Department of Defense that is driven by projects with relative short timelines. Their mission of researching emerging technologies for military use is a perfect match for the Defense Department's concerted efforts to better protect the nation in the cyber world," says Josh Pauli, an academic at Dakota State University specializing in cybersecurity.

DARPA is seeking a systems architecture team to oversee development for Plan X. At the workshop, to be held in Virginia, participants will be briefed on Plan X, shown prototypes of Plan X technologies, and DARPA will hold teaming opportunities for government and contractor employees. The press and general public are barred from attending.

Grand Slam partners Bhupathi, Mirza split at US Open

India's Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza will not play mixed doubles at the US Open despite the pair having captured two Grand Slam titles together as the bitter fall-out from the Olympics continued.

Bhupathi will team up with Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic in New York while Mirza will link with Britain's Colin Fleming.

Mirza played mixed doubles at the Olympics with Leander Paes but only in controversial circumstances after Paes had demanded an assurance that only he, and not Bhupathi or Rohan Bopanna, would be paired with her.

Angry Mirza hit out about the arrangement, saying she was uncomfortable at being used as "bait" to keep Paes happy.

Mirza and Bhupathi won the Australian Open in 2009 and French Open in 2012.

The Delta Customer Service Nightmare That ... - Business Insider ...

deltaMy Uncle Alan died a week ago. He was 72, and his health had been deteriorating for a while, but on Monday it became final. My mother's only sibling was gone.

Alan passed away while my family was on vacation in Malibu at a house we rented for the week. We knew the funeral would be in Detroit, where Alan lived his entire life, but it would take a day for my aunt to make arrangements.

On Monday, in anticipation, my mother called Delta (since Northwest bought Delta, it's the only airline besides Spirit with direct flights from LAX to Detroit) to inquire about bereavement fares. She spoke to an agent who told her that yes, Delta offers bereavement fares (it's a 50% reduction from the regular fare), and to call back as soon as she knew her flight dates.

Tuesday morning it was decided that Alan's funeral would be Thursday at 11AM.

My father called Delta that same morning. He told the first agent he spoke to (Agent #1) that he would need a bereavement fare for two red-eye flights leaving Wednesday and returning Thursday night after the funeral. (My parents insisted that my two brothers and I stay in California -- it would be too expensive for us all to fly to Detroit last minute.)

Agent #1 told him the cost would be $821 per person, and the bereavement fare wouldn't apply since they weren't staying over a Saturday. My father explained that last Saturday my uncle was still alive, and next Saturday the funeral would be over. Agent #1 asked my father if it would be possible to push the funeral back until next Saturday. (In the Jewish religion, you can't have a funeral on a Saturday.)

My father asked to speak to Agent #1's supervisor.

Supervisor #1 got on the phone and told my father that in the time he had been holding, the rate had increased to $1,396 per person roundtrip. My father asked how that was possible, since he'd been on hold the entire time. Supervisor #1 told him that he should have asked to secure the initial fare when talking to Agent #1.

My father pleaded with Supervisor #1, who, was finally able to get the price back down to $821 per person.

Supervisor #1 booked the flight over the phone for my father. He read my father the official confirmation number, which my father wrote down. We didn't have a printer at the rental house, so my father was relying on that confirmation number (and his credit card) to print his tickets at the airport.

The flights were expensive ($1,642 in total), but they were booked. My mother knew she'd be at her brother's funeral, and she was relieved. She sat down and put together some words to speak at the service.

On Wednesday night my parents packed a carry-on and drove to LAX for their 11:05 PM flight. They arrived at the Delta terminal two and a half hours before takeoff. The self check-in kiosk wasn't working, so they stood in line to talk to a real person. My father handed his credit card to the agent behind the desk (Agent #2) to retrieve the tickets.

Agent #2 shook his head and broke the news to my parents: they had been booked on the 4:55 PM flight, which had left four hours ago.

(Agent #1 had screwed up and booked them on the wrong flight.)

My father explained that no, they had booked the 11:05 PM flight over the phone and he had the confirmation number to prove it. Agent #2 said that was the confirmation number for the 4:55 PM flight.

My father explained the situation as calmly as he could. There was a funeral in 14 hours that they'd miss if they didn't make that flight. Agent #2 reiterated that there was nothing he could do. He suggested my parents call Delta's Customer Care number. They tried, but the phone line had closed at 4 PM PST, five hours ago.

My father asked to speak with a supervisor, who came to the desk after 30 minutes of waiting and told my parents that there was no way to get them on the 11:05 PM flight.

My father asked to speak with the Head Supervisor and was told that the Head Supervisor was dealing with something else at the moment and would come down as soon as he had a moment. Agent #2 told my parents to step away from the desk, and when they did, the agent took the opportunity to leave her post. The desk was empty.

Time was running out.

While they waited for the Head Supervisor, my parents called other airlines to get on another flight. They ran across the airport and tried to get on a United Airways flight that would connect in Chicago. The flight was completely full. They were out of luck.

My parents returned to the Delta desk knowing that they weren't going to make it to the funeral. But they still wanted to express their anger to the Head Supervisor.

A half hour later, the Head Supervisor finally came down to the desk. By that time it was after 11PM. The only plane that would get them to Detroit on time had just taken off.

Head Supervisor looked at Agent #2's screen and said to my father: "It shows here that you rejected the 2 first class tickets we offered you for this flight."

My father explained that no such offer had been made, and if it had, he would have jumped on it.

The Head Supervisor said the computer showed the offer had been made, and there were actually two empty first class seats on the flight that had just left.

(Clearly, Agent #2 was trying to save his butt by logging that he had offered my father those two open seats. But at that point, it didn't matter. The flight was gone and it was Delta's word against my parents'.)

The Head Supervisor gave my parents two $300 vouchers to fly Delta again, and suggested they write a letter to corporate explaining what happened. (My father also called Delta and got a refund on the tickets for the flight they'd missed.)

So, four hours after they left for LAX, my parents returned to the Malibu house to tell us the news.

My mother was going to miss her brother's funeral. And it was all Delta's fault.

The next day my family gathered to watch the live-stream of Alan's funeral on my brother's laptop. My mom's best childhood friend, Rhonda, read my mother's words aloud:

Alan was my big brother. He was my only sibling. He was exactly 12 years and one day older than me...

iOS 6 preview: Shared Photo Streams

iOS 6 preview: Shared Photo Streams

Photo Stream debuted in iOS 5 as part of iCloud and while it offered some nifty automatic backup and sync store and push features, it lacked a lot of the sharing and gallery features that made Mobile Me so family friendly. Now, with iOS 6, Apple is adding sharing back to their cloud photo solution, and while it's not the same as before, it could be just as social.

Here's how Apple describes Shared Photo Streams.

Now you can share just the photos you want, with just the people you choose. Simply select photos from the Photos app, tap the Share button, choose who you want to share your photos with, and they?re on their way. Friends using iCloud on an iOS 6 device or a Mac running Mountain Lion get the photos delivered immediately in the Photos app or iPhoto. You can even view shared photo streams on Apple TV. If the folks you're sharing with aren?t using an Apple device, they can view your photos on the web. People can like individual photos and make comments. And you can share as much as you want: Your shared photo streams don?t count against your iCloud storage, and they work over Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

And, based on what Apple has shown off to date, here's how it works:

  • From your Photo Stream album, select the photos you want to share.

  • Choose the contacts you want to share the Photo Stream photos with.

  • A push notification will notify your contacts of the shared Photo Stream photo.

  • Shared Photo Stream photos appear in albums in the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad photo album.

  • Shared Photo Stream photos appear in the Photo Stream section of iPhoto and Aperture on Mac OS X.

  • Shared Photo Stream photos can be also be viewed in a web browser, including on Windows PCs.

  • Shared Photo Stream photos appear in the Photo Stream section of Apple TV as well.

While it doesn't work the same way the old MobileMe Galleries did, Shared Photo Stream do provide some interesting functionality all their own. The question is, with the ability to share photos already built into popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and services like Instagram and Path, does anyone really need Photo Streams to be shared as well? Perhaps, especially for those who don't really want to be social with their photos, but who only want to share them directly with a few friends and family members.

iOS 6 is scheduled for release this fall, perhaps as soon as September 19. For more on iOS 6 and Siri, check out:

Google on Apple v. Samsung: most infringed patents 'don't relate to the core Android operating system'

When the jury in Apple v. Samsung handed down its verdict on Friday, we watched Apple take a victory lap and heard Samsung warn of hampered competition, but one company remained conspicuously silent: Google. This weekend, though, Mountain View finally released a statement, insisting that while Samsung lost the trial, the ruling doesn't actually implicate Android. "The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don't relate to the core Android operating system," the company said, noting that several of these patents are being revisited by the US Patent Office. Still, buried in that statement is an implicit acknowledgment that if Samsung can't reverse the decision on appeal, innovation among Android devices might well be be stifled:

"The mobile industry is moving fast and all players - including newcomers - are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don't want anything to limit that."

Of course, Samsung has indeed said it intends to appeal (and an internal memo reported by CNET corroborates this), so it would seem that the proxy battle against Android is far from over, and the drone of legalese is sure to continue.
