Net Zero Is Bliss At Maharishi University In Iowa

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is best known for having brought Transcendental Meditation to the West, but he also founded the Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in Fairfield, Iowa (yes). Now, the university?s Schwartz-Guich Sustainable Living Center will give students an opportunity to experience sustainable living firsthand.

Incorporating principles of Bau Biology (a German system that focuses on creating a healthy indoor environment), as well as Maharishi Vedic Architecture (an Indian system of architecture focused on the precise orientation, proportions and placement of rooms), the MUM Sustainable Living Center was designed to surpass LEED Platinum qualification while complying with most of the criteria of the Cascadia Living Building Challenge. It will operate entirely off the grid.

The building is one of the few in the country to qualify as net zero, and one of even fewer that can claim the banner of grid positive (i.e., it produces more energy than it consumes) via its solar power system.?A rainwater catchment system and on-site natural waste-water treatment likewise take the building off (sewer) grid with respect to water and waste treatment.

Additional green features include natural daylighting in evey room; natural, breathable earth block walls (which were made by the program?s students), purified rainwater for both potable and non-potable water functions; and an on-site water purification and recycling system consisting of plants, algae, and bacteria.

The building is named after MUM trustee Eric Schwartz and his wife, Mary Sue, and MUM alumnus Dr. Steve Guich. More about the building is available online.

Cabrera's homer gives Tigers sweep, 4-3 over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Miguel Cabrera's two-run, one-out homer in the ninth inning lifted Detroit to a 4-3 victory over Minnesota on Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers finished a three-game sweep of the Twins in style after leaving 10 men on base earlier in the game.

Cabrera crushed a 0-2 pitch to center field from Matt Capps (0-3), who took his first blown save in 10 tries. Rookie Quintin Berry started the inning with a single.

Jose Valverde followed for his ninth save in 11 attempts. Denard Span led off with a single. After Ben Revere popped his bunt up for the first out, Joe Mauer hit a hard line out to left. Then after Span stole second, Josh Willingham walked. But Justin Morneau flied out to right.

Brayan Villarreal (1-1) recorded two outs in the eighth for the victory.

Prince Fielder had two more hits and went 9 for 12 in the series plus two walks for the Tigers, who have won 21 of their last 27 games against the Twins. After a ray-of-hope four-game winning streak on the road that included a two-game sweep of the Tigers in Detroit, the Twins have lost five in a row.

Alexi Casilla went 3 for 3 for the Twins, including an RBI single against Rick Porcello in the fourth. Mauer had two hits, tying the game at 2 with a double in the fifth. Willingham singled him in to give the Twins the lead.

P.J. Walters gave up seven hits and four walks, both highs over four appearances since being brought up from Triple-A less than three weeks ago. But he finished six innings with only two first-inning runs allowed and struck out four.

Coming off his first career complete game, a 9-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night, Walters wasn't as good this time. But he was just as gritty. The 27-year-old right-hander got a double-play grounder by Don Kelly to end the fourth with the bases loaded. He struck out Brennan Boesch to finish the fifth with the bases full. Then he escaped the sixth on a double-play groundout by Ryan Raburn after a walk and a single to start the frame.

Walters has completed six innings and allowed either two or three runs in each of his four starts. Jared Burton retired Boesch on a hard bouncer back to the mound to end the seventh with two runners on. Glen Perkins struck out two in the eighth.

But Capps couldn't finish against the Tigers, who left eight in scoring position.

They did a lot wrong, including in the first when Cabrera was out after his RBI single because he was too casual about returning to the base after he rounded it. Casilla sneaked behind him to catch the quick throw and slap the tag on the burly slugger. The Tigers still, however, wrangled out a win. That's an encouraging sign for a team widely picked to run away with the division but which has been struggling to find a rhythm.

Porcello lasted six innings, allowing nine hits, three runs and three walks with only one strikeout. He hasn't won in four starts, but this was a much better performance. He took a sharp drive by Mauer off his leg but managed to stay on his feet and throw for the out before hobbling around in pain in the third.

NOTES: Berry, who made his major league debut earlier this week when CF Austin Jackson strained an abdominal muscle, has at least one hit in each of his five games. He's 8 for 21. ... Twins RHP Nick Blackburn (strained left quadriceps) is eligible to come off the DL on Friday but will make two rehab starts for Triple-A Rochester, the first on Tuesday. "If he throws a no-hitter, he's still going to start" on Sunday, manager Ron Gardenhire said. ... The Twins start a three-game series with Oakland on Monday in a holiday matinee. LH Scott Diamond (3-1, 1.78 ERA) takes the mound for the Twins, and LH Travis Blackley (0-0, 0.00) will make his first start of the season for the A's. ... The Twins had two moving moments on the field before the game. Mauer hosted an 8-year-old boy named Grant with leukemia as part of the Make-A-Wish program, competing with him in the video game "MLB 11: The Show" with the action shown on the scoreboard above left field. Then Robert Buresh, a Minnesota Air National Guard master sergeant just returned from Afghanistan, surprised his daughters in front of home plate as they ran around the bases in a promotional contest.

Beastie Boys' Ad-Rock Pays Tribute To Adam Yauch

'Saturday Night Live,' Dalai Lama, Thom Yorke and fun. also honor Beasties rapper MCA.

Two days after losing his life-long friend and band mate of 30 years, Adam "MCA" Yauch
, Beastie Boys rapper Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz posted a heartfelt note on the band's Tumblr page about his late comrade.

"As you can imagine, s--- is just fkd up right now," he wrote in the blog, which was accompanied by a picture of a hand with the message, "PWR 2 MCA" in front of a bank of CDs. "But I wanna say thank you to all our
friends and family (which are kinda one in the same) for all the love and support.
I'm glad to know that all the love that Yauch has put out into the world is coming right back at him."

Yauch, who died at age 47 on Friday after a three-year battle with cancer, was shouted out by many of his friends, admirers and acts he'd influenced over the weekend. Fun. threw in a verse of "Sabotage" as part of their encore at Washington D.C.'s 9:30 Club on Friday night and "Saturday Night Live" played a clip of the group's 1994 performance of "Sure Shot" on the show featuring Rihanna
as a musical guest. HBO dedicated the broadcast of last month's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony into its broadcast of the proceedings, where the B-Boys were inducted as only the third rap group to enter the the Hall.

Among the luminaries weighing in was exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama, who released a statement in which he said, "Adam had helped us raise awareness on the plight of the Tibetan people by organizing various freedom Tibet concerts and he will be remembered by his holiness and the Tibetan people." Yauch, a Buddhist who was behind the landmark all-star Tibetan Freedom concerts
of the late 1990s, was blessed by the Dalai Lama last year.

MTV News also took to the airwaves to express our appreciation for the influential artist with the one-hour special "Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy,"
during which we reflected on the legendary MC's career and the indelible mark he made on music as a whole, as well as on society.

Kim Gordon, former bassist for Sonic Youth, who were big supporters of the Tibetan Freedom shows, issued a statement to England's New Musical Express, in which she praised Yauch's lyrical abilities, "He told me once that he really liked the lyrics to [Sonic Youth's] 'Bull In The Heather'. It surprised me that he had even listened to it. It meant a lot to me that he went out of his way to tell me that, coming from such a great rapper and lyricist."

Another Tibetan Freedom supporter and performer, Radiohead's Thom Yorke, posted a remembrance on the band's website, in which he wrote, "I was very sad to hear the news of Adam Yauch's death yesterday.
We looked up to the Beastie Boys a lot when we were starting out and how they maintained artistic control making wicked records but still were on a major label, and the Tibetan Freedom Concerts they organized had a very big influence on me personally and the way Adam conducted himself and dealt with it all impressed me a lot. He was a mellow and v smart guy. May he rest in peace."

The tributes followed earlier ones from the likes of Madonna
, the B-Boys' longtime DJ, Mix Master Mike and Justin Timberlake
as well as in-concert shout-outs from Coldplay and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Share your memories of Adam on Twitter using the hashtag #RIPMCA.
