New?discovery resurrects 'Jesus Tomb' debate

One of the designs etched on a bone box found within a 1st-century Jerusalem tomb suggests the biblical story of Jonah and the fish, which held significant symbolism for early Christians.

By Alan Boyle

Using a remote-controlled camera on the end of a robotic arm, investigators have found what could be the earliest evidence of a Christian iconography in Jerusalem, engraved on a set of "bone boxes" inside a nearly intact 1st-century tomb.

One of the limestone boxes, known more formally as an ossuary, carries a Greek inscription calling on God to "rise up" or "raise up" someone. Another box shows the carved image of a fish, perhaps with the prophet Jonah in its mouth. Allusions to fish and the "sign of Jonah" came to be widely used among early Christians, but not among Jerusalem's Jews.

Those discoveries alone would be enough to get biblical scholars excited. But the investigators in this case are the same people who claimed five years ago that ossuaries from a nearby tomb were engraved with the names of the biblical Jesus and his family. They're putting forth this new find as supporting evidence for their earlier claims, and resurrecting the topic in a newly published book ("The Jesus Discovery") as well as a Discovery Channel documentary that's due to air this spring.

"This does reopen the whole question about the 'Jesus Tomb,'" James Tabor, a scriptural scholar at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, told me.

That almost guarantees that the link to Jesus will take center stage once again in the discussion of the discovery, with most archaeologists discounting the connection. There's even a chance that the renewed controversy would push this most recent find out of the spotlight. That would be a terrible shame, said John Dominic Crossan, an expert on 1st-century Christianity and former Catholic priest who is a professor emeritus at DePaul University.

"It's a stunning discovery," he said. "It's a stunning piece of technology. As a scholar, I really don't want to get lost in saying, 'Oh, come on, it's off the wall.' Yeah, it's off the wall. But look at the wall!"

James Tabor / UNCC

Engineer Walter Klassen and filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici hold the camera-equipped robotic arm in its folded-up configuration.

Or in this case, look at the box.

How the boxes were found
Tabor and documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici located both of the 1st-century tombs ? the so-called Jesus Family Tomb as well as the one with the newly revealed inscriptions ? in a Jerusalem neighborhood known as Talpiot years ago. They looked into previous claims that the bone boxes in the Jesus Family Tomb were marked with names that meshed with the names of Jesus' brothers and sisters, as mentioned in the Gospels. The investigators went on to cite a statistical analysis of name frequency as evidence that the family interred in the caskets was that of Jesus.

Most provocatively, they pointed to one box that was said to contain the remains of Jesus, and another containing the remains of "Judah, son of Jesus." These claims ran counter to the mainstream Christian view that Jesus made a bodily resurrection after his crucifixion and death, and that he did not marry or have children. To explain the seeming discrepancy with the Gospels, Tabor and his colleagues suggested that early Christians did not necessarily believe in a bodily resurrection, but rather a spiritual resurrection in which Jesus left behind the "old clothes" of the flesh.

The first book ("The Jesus Family Tomb") and TV documentary ("The Lost Tomb of Jesus") set off a wave of protests, with skeptics saying that Tabor and Jacobovici were sensationalizing an unprovable assertion. Despite the criticism, the team continued their work, focusing on the other tomb. This tomb was only briefly examined in 1981 before protests by Orthodox Jews, concerned about the disturbance of a gravesite, forced an end to the archaeological study. The tomb was sealed back up, and a condominium was built over it. Tabor and his colleagues refer to this tomb as the "Patio Tomb," because a patio sits almost directly above the tomb.

Israel's civil and religious authorities were resistant to efforts to reopen the Patio Tomb, so Tabor, Jacobovici and their colleagues came up with an unorthodox alternative: They suggested building a robotic arm that could be extended down vent holes and drill holes into the tomb, to a maximum length of more than 15 feet. The authorities gave their permission, and the documentary team proceeded with their remote-controlled video exploration in June 2010.

James Tabor / UNCC

Investigators shot imagery of the 1st-century Jerusalem tomb and the bone boxes inside the tomb using a robotic arm, as shown in this video frame.

The filmmakers peered into niches cut into the tomb and found several inscribed bone boxes, including one that was left ajar to reveal the bones still within. In one of the niches, two boxes were jammed close together. As the robotic arm maneuvered to look at the side of one of the boxes, one of the investigators cried out, "Wait, wait, stop there!" A design had been etched into the limestone ? a design that looked like a fish with a stick figure hanging out of its mouth.

The meaning of the inscriptions
After consulting with other scriptural experts, the investigators concluded that the etching showed a representation of Jonah and the fish. The biblical tale of the prophet who was swallowed by a giant fish, only to be vomited up alive three days later, had a special resonance for early Christians, who believed in Jesus' resurrection after three days in a tomb. The image of the fish, which would not typically be carved on a Jewish ossuary, suggested to Tabor and his colleagues that this might be the earliest surviving example of a Christian marking on an artifact in Jerusalem.

The team's excitement grew when they saw the inscription on the box sitting next to the one with the fish: A four-line inscription in Greek appeared to refer to a belief in the resurrection. The inscription could be read as "Divine Jehovah, raise up, raise up," or "The Divine Jehovah raises up to the Holy Place," or "Divine Jehovah, raise up [abbreviated name]."

"This inscription has something to do with resurrection of the dead, either of the deceased in the ossuary, or perhaps, given the Jonah image nearby, an expression of faith in Jesus' resurrection," Tabor said in a news release.

The Jesus connection
Tabor and his colleagues tie this latest discovery to their earlier claims by suggesting that the two tombs were part of one complex, which might have been chiseled out by a wealthy supporter of Jesus and his disciples. They even name their prime suspect: Joseph of Arimathea, a high-ranking religious official who was said in the Gospels to have arranged Jesus' burial. In the investigators' view, the fact that they found such a strong connection to early Christianity in the Patio Tomb strengthens their original claims for the Jesus Family Tomb, which is 200 feet away.

"We now have the new archaeological evidence, literally written in stone, that can guide us in properly understanding what Jesus' earliest followers meant by their faith in Jesus' resurrection from the dead ? with his earthly remains, and those of his family, peacefully interred just yards away," Tabor and Jacobovici wrote.

Crossan said that was too much of a leap. "There's nothing that associates [the Patio Tomb] with Joseph of Arimathea," he said.

He said the two tombs may well have no relationship to each other: "This whole area is riddled with tombs, as far as we can tell."

Ben Witherington, a New Testament scholar at Asbury Theological Seminary, voiced a similar view. "The attempt to connect [the Patio Tomb] to the other tombs is sheer conjecture, unless the tombs were connected," he told me.

Witherington said the connections made in the newly published book were similar to those put forth in Tabor's earlier work. "Most of us who have evaluated his work would say, OK, all very interesting, but it's building one speculation on another speculation," he said.

However, Witherington was intrigued by the fish carving. "We have early Christian ossuaries with the fish symbol ... in the 2nd century, if not back into the 1st century," he said. "That is the early Christian symbol for I-Ch-Th-Y-S ... 'Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.' What we don't have any evidence for is that symbol on Jewish ossuaries."

The words of the inscription also caught Witherington's interest. "They imply a belief about the resurrection," he said.

It is thought that the use of such bone boxes in Jerusalem ceased in the year 70, due to the Roman destruction of the city. Thus, there's a chance that the residents buried in the Patio Tomb actually lived during the time of Jesus and his first disciples. However, Crossan noted that Christians weren't the only ones in 1st-century Jerusalem who held a religious belief in resurrection. The Pharisees and the Essenes also looked forward to the resurrection of the righteous, he said.

"What I would say is ... this is a rich Pharisee, a rich person in the 1st century who believes in the resurrection," Crossan told me. "We always thought that [the image of] Jonah coming out of the fish was peculiarly Christian. Maybe that's one more thing that the early Christians took from Jewish tradition, and this would be the first evidence."

More about biblical archaeology:

An academic paper on the Patio Tomb project is being posted to The Bible and Interpretation on Tuesday, and Tabor says the paper will be submitted for print publication as well. A press event about the project and the Discovery Channel documentary has been scheduled for 11 a.m. ET Tuesday at Discovery Times Square in New York City. Funding for the project was provided by Discovery Channel / Vision Television / Associated Producers. Tabor's colleague in obtaining the excavation license from the Israel Antiquities Authority was Rami Arav, professor of archaeology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Disease Sleuths Surf For Outbreaks Online

Most folks who wake up feeling crummy will sit down with a computer or smartphone before they sit down with a doctor.

They might search the Web for remedies or tweet about their symptoms. And that's why scientists who track disease are turning to the Internet for early warning signs of epidemics.

"Surveillance is one of the cornerstones of public health," says Philip Polgreen, an epidemiologist at the University of Iowa. "It all depends on having not only accurate data, but timely data."

?

Public health officials have been trying to speed up their responses to disease outbreaks since, well, they started responding to outbreaks.

There's still plenty of room for improvement.

The current system requires the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to compile reports about from physicians and labs all over the country ? and that can take a while. There's typically a week-long delay between an outbreak and the release of an official report.

To get an early read on things, epidemiologists look for the first clues of illness ? a rise in thermometer sales or increased chatter on hospital phone lines. Now, they're tapping into the Internet.

ah . . . ah . . . AH-CHOOGLE

In 2008, Polgreen found a strong correlation between flu-related searches on and actual flu cases in the U.S. Around the same time, Google unveiled Google Flu Trends, which estimates flu activity based on Web searches.

Google Flu Trends

Google's estimates for the percentage of patients with flu-like illnesses closely match reports from the CDC.

The principle is pretty simple. On the Internet, people who type "fever" or "flu medication" into a search bar are more likely to end up in a hospital a few days later. Data collected from millions of these searches can be shared as they happen, many days before official reports.

But this speed comes with questions of accuracy. Can these signals be trusted? "Skepticism is healthy," Polgreen says. "Because there's a novelty effect, there may be excessive expectations both among researchers and the public."

With this in mind, a team of researchers at Johns Hopkins wanted to see if Google's estimates would prove accurate and useful in the everyday operation of a hospital. They compared Google searches originating in Baltimore to the number of patients who showed up with flu-like symptoms at a local emergency room.

"It seems like a stretch, but what we found ? amazingly ? is that there's a really high correlation between these searches in the community and what we're seeing in hospitals," says Richard Rothman, the study's co-author.

Search data were an accurate predictor of ER crowding. But that wasn't the study's most surprising tidbit. One weakness of online surveillance is that public hysteria about an epidemic might skew the results.

For example, when the bird flu outbreak was announced in 2009, there was a huge spike in flu-related searches in Baltimore. Public health officials labeled the phenomenon "fear week."

"Even though this was technically a false alarm, it did mirror what we saw in the emergency department," says Andrea Dugas, the lead author of the study.

There was a corresponding spike in ER visits. In fact, 6 percent more people showed up during the week of heightened anxiety about the flu than the week when swine flu reached Baltimore months later.

Tweeting Cholera

Search data aren't the only public health clues. John Brownstein and Rumi Chunara, researchers from Harvard Medical School, traced the cholera outbreak in Haiti by gathering data from all over the Web.

Instead of counting search terms, they collected thousands and thousands of Twitter posts, and used HealthMap, an online disease surveillance tool, to compile cholera-related news reports. The first signs of a cholera epidemic could be seen in these data two weeks before official reports. If officials had been monitoring the Web, they might have been able to respond faster.

"Still, there are drawbacks to these Web-based data streams," Brownstein says. The correlation between online trends and real life can falter when public interest wanes, he says.

Tracking Haiti's Epidemic Online

Official reports on Haiti's cholera outbreak closely tracked data from Twitter and HealthMap (an online surveillance tool created by John Brownstein, an epidemiologist, and Clark Freifeld, a software developer) for the first 100 days of the epidemic.

In the early days of the cholera outbreak, Twitter and HealthMap data closely matched official reports. After 100 days online activity dropped off even though the epidemic raged on. Disease is easiest to detecte when it is out of the ordinary. Regularly recurring maladies like malaria are hard to follow online.

Communicating About Disease

Online disease surveillance ? or "Webidemiology" ? is a cool new tool, and researchers are eagerly testing it out and double-checking the data they collect. But it won't be used by itself to make important public health decisions anytime soon.

"From an early detection standpoint there is a lot of work that needs to be done to sift through the noise," Brownstein says.

While researchers are working out the kinks of flu surveillance and a few other illnesses (Google just expanded its operation to track Dengue fever) other diseases will always fly under the Internet radar. Some have nonspecific or overlapping symptoms so they're hard to recognize. And there's a whole host of illnesses, such as sexually transmitted diseases, that people aren't necessarily eager to discuss on the Web.

"The Internet is just one additional stream of information," Polgreen says. "It's certainly not going to replace traditional forms of surveillance."

While the Internet may not be a perfect predictive tool, researchers and public health officials agree that it is great for one thing: communication.

Social networking allows officials to easily reach the public and enter into a conversation. Tweets, searches and Facebook posts can give officials a sense of public reaction to vaccines, or their attitude towards an epidemic.

"It's a quick and easy barometer for public anxiety," Polgreen says.

And in a public health emergency, that can be just as useful as cold, hard numbers about cases.

Lawyers file class action copyright suit against WestLaw and ...

by Stephan Kinsella on February 23, 2012

As can be seen here. (h/t Skip Oliva)

This reminds somewhat of the practice of lawyers sending cease-and-desist letters and then claiming copyright in them to stop them from being posted, as noted here:

  • http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20071005/174623.shtml: ?In an apparent attempt to avoid the Streisand Effect, lawyers sending threat letters sometimes claim that the recipient would violate the firm?s copyright by posting it online. This post is about Public Citizen?s response to one dumb threat letter and its decision to post the letter online despite the copyright claim.? It?s funny how popular it has become for lawyers to claim it?s illegal to post or even show anyone their cease-and-desist letters. Remember: just because a lawyer says so, it doesn?t mean it?s true. You can see Public Citizen?s response to the letter (pdf), which lays out a variety of reasons why the cease and desist is ridiculous (it?s yet another attempt to force criticism offline) and ends with a fantastic response to the claim that the original C&D is covered by copyright and cannot be posted online without additional charges: http://www.citizen.org/documents/directbuycd.pdf: sometimes such letters conclude: ?Please be aware that this letter is copyrighted by our law firm, and you are not authorized to republish this in any manner. Use of this letter in a posting, in full or in part, will subject you to further legal causes of action.?

Scottsboro Parks and Recreation Board Meeting - Goose Pond ...

Tuesday evening was the monthly meeting of the Scottsboro Parks and Recreation Board or as it is commonly known as the Goose Pond Colony GPC)?Board. GPC web site: http://goosepond.org/

The big story for GPC are the numerous renovation projects.?The major project being the recently 3 renovated cabins. Story in Scottsboro's Daily Sentinel about the renovation project: ?http://thedailysentinel.com/news/business/article_a7187808-59c9-11e1-9dad-001871e3ce6c.html?More cabin and lodge?improvements involve the outside electrical outlet installations for those who need to recharge their boat batteries.

The cabins are not the only renovation occuring at Scottsboro's crown jewel, Goose Pond Colony-Plantation Point. There are several other renovations ongoing at GPC which have been needed for some period of time.

Scottsboro Parks and Recreation Board

Campgrounds- The campground is undergoing renovation including the installation of WiFi for the campers. It was estimated the WiFi project should be complete in 4-6 weeks. The campground has been undergoing renovation for about 1 year now. Clearing, improving?and adding spots, refurbishing the bath house and other projects. Lighting will soon be installed on the campground docks. The board approved the $1500.00 project last night. Of note was the $3500.00 savings which will be reflected by performing the task in house.

Marina- It was reported the repairs to the docks have been delayed due to the contractor having to order and back order parts. The lighting projects are underway. Dock?4 is?complete and it was reported that docks 1-3 will begin soon. The forklift at the boat Dry Storage Facility will need to be renovated. Leaking seals, bakes and lift hydraulics was?reported to be the problem. It was also reported the lift needs an overhaul; to repair the lift and overhaul could cost up to $89,000. A new forklift would cost approximately $270,000 according to the marina manager. A full report and exact estimate will be presented at March's board meeting. A modern outside lighting system has been installed at the marina dry storage facility which has already realized a significant savings but will also save money monthly in electrical costs.

Golf- It was reported that much has been accomplished to improve the golf courses during the winter months. A combined Club House and Pro Shop at Plantation Pointe. The double wide mobile home which was used as the Pro-Shop may be sold or used otherwise. Options are to be presented at the next board meeting. Renovation of the Cart Storage Facility is underway. Low bids have been received for materials and the construction will begin shortly. Fencing bid- $4250.00; Roof bid- $4267.00.? 7 major Golf Tournaments are Scheduled. The Spring Fling will begin?on ?March?9 with practice. During this time Plantation Pointe will be open for the 9 days of the Spring Fling Tournament. Plantation Point is scheduled to open on March the 2nd weekend.?The Goose Pond Colony Golf Course Snack Bar is open and running. "Stevarinos" leased the property. Current hours are from 9AM till 2PM. Once the weather warms and business increases it?was reported the hours will be expanded.

Fishing- The Bait and Tackle shop is under new management which was effective Feb 1, 2012. There are many tournament events planned. (see schedule below)? It was reported the food is great at the shop.

The Docks- Excellent food, a view and?atmosphere which can only be found at this restaurant.

A Lavender Sunset, looking south down the mighty Tennessee River from GPC, Scottsboro, Alabama. (Photo by G. Morgan)

Other improvements includes a new radio system due to new federal requirements. The 12 new radios reportedly will cost $7900.00 per the?bid. However, this will eliminate the annual tower cost of $3000.00. Signage will be added around the park directing people to the appropriate facility. It was reported this will cost approximately?$400.00

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS-GOLF

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS-FISHING

FINANCIAL REPORT: ?Per report- "In spite of revenues being down $19,000, 2.5%, after adjusting for facility improvement expenses the loss is down $55,000, 37%." Current year actual revenue is reported at $732,068; current year to date variable expenses are $708,846. Salaries, electricity, health insurance,??maintenance, fuel costs- marina fuel and?park maintenance fuel,??and special projects improvements are the big variable expense items;?current year to date fixed expenses (which includes the Plantation Pointe Bond Expense) are $233,735 - of that fixed expense total the Plantation Bond Expense, interest plus principle, is the big payout equaling $127,440.00, 54.5% of total fixed expenses. Other major fixed expenses include Marina Principle-$36,000; Cart Lease-$24,965; Complex Insurance-$15,835.00. Bottom Line- loss of $210,513, less special project improvements of approximately $118K equals loss of $92K as compared to last years adjusted loss of $147K.

Special Comment: In light of the recent Attorney Generals Opinion which was submitted as a result of?a group of influential disgruntled golfers?complaining about?the?reduced hours of operation?of Plantation Point?( The hours were reduced to?save money due to financial facts demonstrating?that the Plantation Course was loosing money "head over heals." The home properties at the Points cost the Parks and recreation board $1 million dollars in sewer improvements.) the Attorney General suggested on 4 different occasions in the findings that parties cooperate with each other.

Trails End, on the Tennessee River, Goose Pond Colony (photo by G. Johnston for Garry Morgan)

It is this writers opinion the current problems originating for Goose Pond Colony are those problems created solely by selfish golfers, including one on the city council, and the unwise decision by a ?previous city council to purchase the Plantation Pointe golf course several years previous. It also becomes apparent that the disgruntled golfers, including the one city council member, attempts a self centered power play in the attempts to take control of the complex. If a spirit of cooperation cannot be found the complex could suffer more damage due to negative publicity. I have been following the problems and successes of our park at Goose Pond and the Pointe?for many years. The complex was on the edge of bankruptcy?due?to a severe financial loss as a result of mismanagement and misappropriation. Misappropriation which was never investigated due to the influential citizens involved.?The current board should be commended on?the most difficult task of pulling the complex out of a deep financial hole. To the current Scottsboro Parks and Recreation Board, thank you for a job well done.

Film Interview: Oren Moverman ? Rampart (Millennium Entertainment)

by Rock ?n Roll Ghost

#

?

Woody Harrelson in Rampart

Oren Moverman doesn?t make ?nice? films or easily compartmentalized ones, either.? Moverman is far more interested in characters and what motivates them to do what they do.? His previous film, The Messenger, his first directorial effort, garnered him an Oscar nomination for his screenplay (along with co-writer Alessandro Camon) and a nomination for Woody Harrelson as Best Supporting Actor.? Harrelson has re-teamed with Moverman on his latest film, Rampart, the story of member of the LAPD?s Rampart Division in 1999 whose life is spinning irrevocably out of control.

Harrelson plays Dave Brown, a Vietnam veteran (something he likes to bring up when people start questioning the motives for his actions) and long standing tough guy with a badge who compares policing akin to being in a war zone.? Brown lives in delusion at home, with his two exes, both of whom have had children by him.? His life, something that moves along through Brown?s sheer will, begins to slide when he?s caught on tape beating a man who collided into his squad car.? A seemingly simple cash grab from an underground card game goes wrong and his version of events is questioned.? From there Brown?s grasp on reality slips until the audience is never sure if what he?s saying is really happening or if he?s suffering paranoid delusions.

Oren Moverman (left) and Woody Harrelson (right) on the set of their newest film, Rampart

Rampart is a throwback to the great films of the 1970s, where character mattered more than action.? Moverman?s work is comparable to the films of Hal Ashby, Don Siegel or Walter Hill.? The journalist in Moverman lays out the facts and gets to the heart of who a person is.? The filmmaker in him then takes that and expands upon it to make compelling drama.? But it all comes down to one thing: Woody Harrelson.? Harrelson has been an actor of great note for awhile now, but this may be his edgiest role to date.? The character of Dave Brown is not sympathetic, but Harrelson manages to grab the viewer?s interest without turning the character into a despicable clown.? You?re still compelled to follow Brown even as it becomes obvious that the man will in no way be redeemed.

Rampart is in theaters now and stars, along with Harrelson, Robin Wright, Sigourney Weaver, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Ben Foster, Ice Cube and Steve Buscemi.? I recently had the chance to speak to Moverman about Rampart, as well as touch on some of his other upcoming projects.? What follows is an edited transcription of that conversation.

Oren Moverman and Ben Foster at the premiere of Rampart in Los Angeles.

Rock ?n Roll Ghost: Is the idea to not go down an original road or to break preconceived notions on the viewers? part something you?re constantly working on as you write a script?

Oren Moverman: Yeah, absolutely.? Especially when your working within a genre that?s been done.? More specifically the LAPD genre.? Our assignment, our challenge was to look at these movies in the same arena and think how are we different and how are we going to make this a less expected narrative and less of an expected experience?? We spent a lot of time talking about it ? not only in the script stage but in production and in post-production.

What sort of input do you get from the other people you work with?

Oren Moverman: Everybody.? Everyone from my actors to my producers to the catering people.? Anybody who has anything to say I want to hear about it.? Because I like that kind of engagement, that kind of interaction where there?s a feeling that everyone is making the movie at the same time.? There are specific people that I call on to give me the hard news.? Ben Foster is my producing partner and he was there every day to put his two cents in and watch my back and to keep everything honest.

I read a quote from Woody Harrelson about not initially liking the film after seeing a rough cut.? What was different about that initial cut from the final cut that he saw to change his mind?

Oren Moverman: The process doesn?t change.? What changes is the outcome.? The process is always the same in the sense that it?s always a search.? It?s crafting, an attempt to sculpt something new, unexpected, that feels dangerous and takes a left turn when you were expecting a right.? So that?s the way we wrote the movie, that?s the way we shot the movie and that?s the way we edited the movie.? The thing is that when you?re editing the movie, there?s not a lot of people around, so you?re in your own process with the editor.? So by the time other people come back to see the movie, you?ve sort of moved on from where you were shooting it, but they?re still shooting it in their heads. So I think that when Woody saw the first cut, the film wasn?t finished, he was really expecting certain things.? Also, it?s not unusual for an actor to sit in front of a movie where he?s in every scene, carrying the entire film, and be overwhelmed by it.? The fact that the sound wasn?t done, the color and the final edit wasn?t really done, I think it was a little too early to see it.? He?ll tell you also that I advised him not to watch it when he did.? He walked away quite hurt by it and disappointed by it.? Then a month and a half later, thankfully, he came back and saw the final movie.? When he saw it, he had a complete turnaround.? He came to me and apologized.? He was such a man about it.? He was so honest and open.? Then we wept like school girls or school boys (depending on the school). Then we moved forward with it locked and loaded.

Oren Moverman and Woody Harrelson at the Toronto International Film Festival

Did you find getting financing easier for Rampart than it was for your previous film The Messenger?? Also, you shot the film on digital, did this help move the shooting of the film along faster?

Oren Moverman: I?m very lucky in the fact I?m not the one to go looking for financing for a movie.? We have producers who rope me into meetings when it?s becoming more real.? We shot for thirty-five days after eight weeks of pre-production.? It was a very lucky situation to have eight weeks of pre-production.? We really got to prepare and be ready by the time we sat down to start making the movie.? Then we shot on the Alexa, which is an Arriflex camera, but it?s digital.? Arriflex is known as a film camera house.? But this is their first digital camera.? This was perfect for us because it?s very sensitive to light. It gives you a lot of latitude in low light situations.? We were shooting with available light, practicals, lamps, not really utilizing a lot of the classic kind of film lighting.

Did you find that you moved that much faster shooting on digital?

Oren Moverman: Not so much.? We moved fast, but I worked with Bob Bukowski, who moves fast no matter what.? It was right for us, it was the right medium.? I didn?t see this movie on film, for some reason.? I imagined it as a movie that came out of the cops caught on tape era.? I thought that there should be a different aesthetic to it.? This one felt right to use digital.

Woody Harrelson rages in the rain in Oren Moverman's Rampart

There was one shot that I really took to for some reason is the pool scene where Woody?s character is swimming while it?s raining out.? How did that scene come about?

Oren Moverman: This is one case where, if you?re open to the process of change, you can do some interesting things.? We had a scene that took place at the front of the house where the character that Robin Wright plays shows up and Woody, as Dave Brown, is waiting for her there.? We lost that location ? the woman who owned the house asked for too much money.? So we went across the street and found this other house, which had a swimming pool.? Originally the scene was going to be in the rain and walking in the back of the house and seeing the pool I thought, okay we found the scene.? It has to be in the rain in the pool, he?s already in so what does it matter.? It really is about this kind of I?m drowning in this, no one is on my side and I?m going to get the Robin Wright character, Linda, to join me and therefore prove to me that she?s absolutely loyal.? Which of course she won?t do.? Not that she isn?t loyal, but because it?s crazy.? He?s acting crazy.

Shooting the scene there was one moment where Woody said I?m just going to go down and lie on the bottom.? Just rest for a second.? We went down with him and shot it and it became part of the scene.? It?s a very unconventional cut.? A lot of the movie works in a way where we wanted it to cut to a place where you don?t see coming.

You?ve started producing with Ben Foster, what was it about him that made you want to produce films with him?

Oren Moverman: It?s the mere fact that he?s one of the most incredible people I?ve ever met.? Ben is brilliant in so many ways.? He?s such a smart guy.? His intelligence is invigorating. He?s an excellent writer.? A beautiful eye ? as a visual person.? Brilliant actor.? And also a great friend.? Someone who is very loyal and understands friendship.? It was a no brainer.? He moved to New York and we started this company together.? He said let?s just make things.? It almost doesn?t matter what it is.? That?s the heart of it.? A great, brilliant guy who also wants to work together.? Not much thought goes into it beyond that.

With Rampart, what has the reaction been like from people so far?? Have people been receiving it well?

Oren Moverman: I think any reaction is legitimate.? I?m grateful for people to see the movie and to have a reaction and feeling passionate enough to have a reaction, even if it?s not positive.? By the sheer nature of the set up on the job, I don?t tend to get a lot of negative reactions directed at me.? People don?t tend to engage you personally when they have something bad to say as the director. From what I?ve read and from people I?ve talked to there?s been a very strong, positive reaction.? People have found their way through the movie, which is really great because the movie really begs the audience to interact with them as opposed to just watch it and walk away.? We hope for the audience to get involved in the movie, and have an opinion at the end and to have a dialogue at the end.

How did you originally come into the project? I saw that James Ellroy had originally written the first script and you re-wrote that?

Oren Moverman: Yeah, I was brought in as a writer to work with James?s version and to get it under control so that we could make it into a movie because it was a very big, expensive script.? After I finished my draft they offered it to me as a director.

Is it a great deal different from his script?

Oren Moverman: Yes and no.? There are certain things that are, but I can safely say that he created this world, he created this character, he really created a lot of the setups.? It was a different script for sure, but I have to give him credit for the character, because ultimately it?s a character piece and he?s the guy who came up with him.

With some of your upcoming films, I was wondering if you could touch on the statuses of some of them?? I read that you were working on something with Ben Stiller on David O. Selznick, possibly for HBO?

Oren Moverman: Yeah, it?s an HBO movie that I wrote the script for and am attached to direct with Ben Stiller.? Uh?pending.? Like everything else in the film world.? I finished the script and it?s in your hands and they?re looking at schedules.

Rampart writer/director Oren Moverman

I saw that you wrote an adaptation of the William S. Burroughs book Queer with Steve Buscemi slated to direct.? Has that started shooting yet?

Oren Moverman: No, we?re trying to make it happen for next fall when Steve?s done shooting the new season of Boardwalk Empire.? This is another case where I wrote the script, Steve is directing, Ben Foster is an actor in the movie and our production company is involved with Olive Productions, which is Steve?s production company with Stanley Tucci and Wren Arthur.

I also read that you?re working on something about Brian Wilson.

Oren Moverman: Yeah, that?s a script that I?m writing for Bill Pohlad and John Wells about the incredible life of a musical genius.

Was this something that you were hired to do or you wrote on your own?

Oren Moverman: They came to me with it. They had a script but they wanted to start from scratch.? I pitched them an idea on how to do it and they liked it.

What was your connection to Brian Wilson before that?

Oren Moverman: Before then my connection was?everything I learned about Brian Wilson before that was from Lawrence Inglee, who was a producer on The Messenger and on Rampart.? He is a huge Brian Wilson fan, almost a scholar of Brian Wilson.? He taught me everything about him.

Also read that you?re attached to The Terrorist Search Engine?

Oren Moverman: It?s being written as we speak.

Lower Chinese court rules shops should pull iPads | Technology ...

SHANGHAI (AP) ? Apple's dispute over the iPad trademark deepened Monday after the Chinese company that claims ownership of the name said it won a court ruling against sales of the popular tablet computer in China.

Xie Xianghui, a lawyer for Shenzhen Proview Technology, said the Intermediate People's Court in Huizhou, a city in southern China's Guangdong province, had ruled on Friday that distributors should stop selling iPads in China.

The ruling, which was also reported widely in China's state media, may not have a far-reaching effect. In its battle with Apple, Proview is utilizing lawsuits in several places and also requesting commercial authorities in 40 cities to block iPad sales.

Apple Inc. said in a statement Monday that its case is still pending in mainland China. The company has appealed to Guangdong's High Court against an earlier ruling in Proview's favor.

Apple insists it holds the trademark rights to the iPad in China.

"We bought Proview's worldwide rights to the iPad trademark in 10 different countries several years ago. Proview refuses to honor their agreement with Apple in China and a Hong Kong court has sided with Apple in this matter," said Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu.

Calls to the court in Huizhou rang unanswered.

A letter to Proview's chairman Rowell Yang from the Beijing office of the law firm King & Wood, which is representing Apple, accused Proview of breaching "principles of good faith and fair dealing" and of making "false and misleading" statements.

Proview, a maker of LCD screens which is based in Guangdong, has asked regulators to seize iPads in China in a possible prelude to demanding a payout from Apple. A Shanghai court is due to hear a similar case on Wednesday.

So far, iPads have been pulled from shelves in some Chinese cities but there has been no sign of action at the national level.

Shenzhen Proview Technology is a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Proview International Holdings. It registered the iPad trademark in China in 2001 and says the name was used for a computer described as an "Internet Personal Access Device" that employed touch panel technology.

The company says it plans to ask China's customs agency to block imports and exports of iPads.

Apple contends that it acquired the iPad name when it bought rights in various countries from a Proview affiliate in Taiwan in 2009 for 35,000 British pounds ($55,000). Proview won a ruling from a mainland Chinese court in December that it was not bound by that sale.

Proview International's shares have been suspended from trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since August 2010 and reports say it is deep in debt. It will be delisted in June if it cannot show it has sufficient assets, business operations and working capital.

Proview has filed a trademark-violation lawsuit that goes to court Wednesday in Shanghai. In the meantime, China's mass media is abuzz with speculation over the case.

"The iPad trademark case: Who cheated who?" quizzed a story in Monday's edition of the 21st Century Business Herald.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, points to a Hong Kong court ruling in July that said Proview had acted with the intention of "injuring Apple."

According to that ruling, Apple set up a company in Britain to buy the iPad trademark from owners in various markets without revealing Apple was the purchaser.

Proview has accused Apple of acting dishonestly when it bought rights to the iPad name from Proview's Taiwan affiliate. A Hong Kong court document shows that once the dispute arose, Proview demanded $10 million for the iPad name in China. But Hong Kong's legal system is separate from the mainland's.

The Demand For Small Business Insurance | Magic Money Clip

Broadly speaking, there are three types of insurance in Australia. There is the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) vehicle insurance, Workers Compensation, which is sometimes also known as Professional Indemnity Insurance, and finally, Public Liability or Insurance for Small Businesses. Any small business that deals either directly or indirectly with the public or relies on contracts or other legal documents and forms requires some type of small business insurance.

Businesses are almost always exposed to various risks and threats. That is why business insurance was made available to business owners to keep them financially protected in case an unexpected event occured. Almost all insurance companies offer business insurance and in various forms. They create these policies particularly to cover specific business insurance needs, regardless of the size of the company or the type of business involved. Typical business insurance needs include workers compensation, commercial insurance and insurance for vehicles related specifically to the business. Depending on any unique requirements, other forms of business insurance may also be available.

Workers compensation insurance covers employees if they are injured while doing their job or suffer a work-related illness that requires them to be absent or to seek medical care. Such insurance generally pays for medical treatments, and may pay for lost wages. This insurance can be very beneficial to employees especially those who are working in a high risk environment. Many workers compensation policies are structured in such a way as to encourage workers to return to the job as quickly as is medically advisable.

Commercial insurance can cover everything from physical plants to crops. Finished goods being transported to distributors or to markets, either by land, rail or water can all be covered with commercial insurance too. Commercial insurance also covers any product liability claims.

Business vehicle insurance covers not only delivery vans used exclusively for business purposes, but can also insure large, heavy trucks, tractors, and marine vehicles.

Protecting your business from potential risks should be within your list of priorities as it is one of the keys to achieving success. Additionally, operating a business of any size without purchasing a business insurance is not only financially risky, but in many cases, flat out illegal. And while certain laws can vary slightly between states, the overall concept of providing a secure business environment here in Australia remains constant nationwide, and is something every small business owner should aspire to uphold.

Italy confiscates $6 trillion in fake US bonds

(AP) ? Swiss authorities have confiscated $6 trillion in counterfeit U.S. bonds at the request of Italian prosecutors, authorities in Italy said Friday.

Eight people were arrested in Italy and placed under investigation for fraud and other crimes.

The bonds, carrying the false date of issue of 1934, had been transported in 2007 from Hong Kong to Zurich, where they were transferred to a Swiss trust, according to prosecutors in the southern Italian city of Potenza.

Authorities said that U.S. officials had confirmed the bonds were counterfeit.

Prosecutors said the fraud had not been completed, but it appeared that the suspects intended to try to sell the fake bonds to a developing nation, directly or through an intermediary bank.

Prosecutors refused to say anything more. But the Italian news agency ANSA, citing unidentified investigative sources, said phone taps indicated that there had been some interest from the suspects in acquiring plutonium from unidentified Nigerians. The report from Potenza quoted investigators as saying no such deal had ever materialized.

Recently, Carabinieri police, carrying out a routine search at a highway rest in Italy, stop found a briefcase containing $20 billion in fake bonds.
