Russia warns against military strike on Iran : Voice of Russia

?I share the opinion that a strike [against Iran] will only play into the hand of those vying for the creation of a nuclear bomb. It would be rather an irrational and dangerous step,? Mr. Churkin said in an interview.

Russia?s UN official said he hoped that common sense would prevent the US from attacking Iran. He stressed that none of the P5+1 group members believed Tehran had made its final decision to build a nuclear bomb.

?As long as the decision isn?t final, there remains a leeway for political dialogue. A military attack will torpedo Iran talks and nullify the possibility for the renewal of political negotiations,? Mr. Churkin said.

US must rein in Syria rebels' arms suppliers

Claims that the US is providing Syrian insurgents with so-called ?non-lethal? weapons don?t relieve Washington of any responsibility for murders carried out by armed anti-Assad fighters, Russia?s UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin has said.

The US is an extremely powerful state that enjoys enormous authority in such countries as Qatar, the chief arms supplier of the Syrian opposition, Mr. Churkin stressed.

If the US wants to remain consistent with its policy, it should restrain those countries from providing Syrian rebels with deadly weapons, he added.

The Russian diplomat voiced Moscow?s concern over rumors of a chemical threat in Syria. ?We believe there?s been too much scaremongering? which makes you feel that someone is looking for a pretext to invade Syria. We are afraid the opposition may be tempted to use chemical weapons in their interests,? he added.

Exercise Cuts Prostate Cancer Risk in Caucasians

Previous research has linked exercise to a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer. Studies have also revealed that African-American men have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer and of dying from the disease compared with Caucasians. It is not clear if exercise as a function of race plays any role in these disparities.

To investigate, Lionel L. Baez, MD, of the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and his colleagues asked 307 men (164 white; 143 black) undergoing a prostate biopsy to complete a survey that assessed their exercise amounts per week. The exercise categories included sedentary, mildly active, moderately active, and highly active. Among Caucasians, men who were moderately or highly active were 53% less likely to have biopsy results indicating that they had prostate cancer compared with men who were sedentary or mildly active. There was no association between exercise amount and prostate cancer among black men.

The investigators also looked to see if exercise influenced the grade of tumors that were detected in men who did develop prostate cancer. Among men with cancer, those who exercised had a 13% reduced risk of having high grade disease, meaning that their cancer cells looked particularly abnormal under a microscope and were likely to quickly grow and spread. When this relationship was further explored as a function of race, it remained significant in Caucasians but not in African Americans.

"These findings that African-American men may not benefit from exercise the way Caucasian men do could be a contributor to why African- American race is a risk factor for prostate cancer and aggressive prostate cancer. Further studies are needed to investigate the mechanism behind this racial disparity in deriving cancer-related benefits from exercise which disfavors African-American men," said Dr. Baez.

(AP) ? A Kashmiri man convicted in a 2001 attack on India's Parliament that left 14 people dead was hanged Saturday after a final mercy plea was rejected, a senior Indian Home Ministry official said.

Home Secretary R.K. Singh told reporters that Mohammed Afzal Guru was executed early Saturday morning at New Delhi's Tihar prison.

"It was the law taking its course," Singh said.

Guru was given a Muslim burial in the prison compound, Press Trust of India news agency reported. His family in the India's Jammu-Kashmir state has demanded that his body be handed over, but that seems unlikely given the highly sensitive nature of the execution.

Guru had been on death row since first being convicted in 2002. Subsequent appeals in higher courts were also rejected, and India's Supreme Court set an execution date for October 2006. But his execution was delayed after his wife filed a mercy petition with India's president. That petition, the last step in the judicial process, was turned down earlier this week.

Several rights groups across India and political groups in Indian Kashmir, have said that Guru did not get a fair trial.

Protests broke out Saturday in three parts of Indian Kashmir, including the northwestern town of Sopore, which was Guru's home. Scores of protesters chanting slogans including "We want freedom" and "Down with India" defied a curfew and clashed with police and paramilitary troops, who opened fire. Four protesters sustained bullet wounds and one of them was in critical condition, a senior police officer said on customary condition of anonymity.

Thousands of police and paramilitary troops fanned out across the state preparing for more protests and violence following the announcement of the execution. A curfew was also imposed in most parts of Indian Kashmir, and cable television channels were cut off in the region.

About 30 Kashmiri students and anti-death penalty activists clashed with Indian police and right-wing Hindu groups in New Delhi. Most of the protesters were detained by the police.

Police in Indian Kashmir on Saturday also detained several leaders of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, an umbrella organization of separatist political and religious groups, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to reporters.

The group called for four days mourning in the disputed region and called Guru's hanging "an attack on the collective conscience of the Kashmiri people."

"We appeal to the people to rise in one voice and protest this aggressive act so that it's known to everyone that even if the heads of Kashmiris are cut, they'll never bow under any circumstances," the group said in a statement.

The statement said that Indian Kashmir's chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who also heads the separatist alliance, was detained in New Delhi and not allowed to travel to Srinagar, the main city of Indian Kashmir.

When Guru's death sentence was handed down by India's Supreme Court it sparked protests in Kashmir, and the state government has warned that his execution could destabilize the volatile Himalayan region.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Muslim-majority Kashmir, which is divided between Hindu-dominated India and Muslim-majority Pakistan but is claimed by both nations.

Since 1989, an armed uprising in Indian-controlled Kashmir and an ensuing crackdown have killed an estimated 68,000 people, mostly civilians.

The secrecy in which Guru's execution was carried out was similar to the execution in November of Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman of the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Kasab was also buried in the western Indian prison where he was hanged.

On Dec. 13, 2001, five gunmen entered the compound of India's Parliament and opened fire. A gunbattle with security officers ensued and 14 people, including the gunmen, were killed. India blamed the Pakistan-based militant groups Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The attack led to heightened tensions between India and its neighbor and archrival Pakistan and brought the neighbors to the brink of war, but tensions eased after intense diplomatic pressure from the international community and a promise by then-Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf to clamp down on the militants.

Guru confessed in TV interviews that he helped plot the attack, but later denied any involvement and said he was tortured into confessing.

Government prosecutors said that Guru was a member of Jaish-e-Mohammed, a charge Guru denied.

Guru's family said it had not been told that he was about to be executed.

"Indian government has yet again functioned like a fascist state and hanged him secretly," said Yasin Guru, a relative who lives in the family's compound in Sopore. "They did not have the courtesy to inform his family."

WestJet offers tepid outlook, shares dip

(Reuters) - Canada's WestJet Airlines Ltd offered an uninspiring outlook for the current quarter on Wednesday, sending its shares lower, even as it posted a stronger-than-expected jump in profit for the final three months of 2012 and boosted its dividend.

The outlook raised concerns that Canada's No. 2 air carrier could find it hard to maintain its record of strong growth against the backdrop of a tempered economic outlook for Canada and heightened competition.

Growth in RASM, or revenue per available seat mile, "is clearly decelerating. They are talking about modest growth in Q1," said Raymond James analyst Ben Cherniavsky.

RASM is used to compare the efficiency of airlines. In general, the higher the RASM, the more profitable the airline.

After a strong 2012, Cherniavsky is forecasting a tougher, more competitive 2013 for Canada's airlines as both WestJet and bigger rival Air Canada launch lower-cost subsidiaries. At the same time, the Bank of Canada has lowered its 2013 GDP forecast and Canadian household debt is at record levels.

National Bank Financial analyst Cameron Doerksen was more sanguine about WestJet's prospects, saying a 71 percent rise in fourth-quarter profit and expectations of a moderate increase in RASM for the first quarter were enough for him to re-affirm his positive view on the stock. He increased his target price to C$27 from C$26.

After starting the session firmer, the shares later fell 21 Canadian cents to close at C$22.34 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The stock has risen 66 percent in the past year.

In a note to clients, Doerksen forecast a 21 percent rise in WestJet's earnings in 2013, driven by strong demand for air travel and WestJet's introduction of several revenue-generating initiatives this year, including premium economy seating in the second quarter.

COST-CUTTING PLAN

WestJet, which started life as a low-cost airline 16 years ago but is adding premium services as it searches for ways to increase revenue, said it was working to slash C$100 million ($100.33 million) off its cost base in the next three years.

The main reason is to get "back to our fundamentals of being Canada's low-fare airline and needing to have a cost structure that can continue to support that," WestJet Chief Executive Gregg Saretsky said on a conference call.

The cost cutting will start slowly with little impact in 2013, Saretsky said. It will not include job reductions, he said, but will target items such as back-office costs and replacing contractors with lower paid full-time employees.

As part of its new revenue-generating initiatives, WestJet is launching lower-fare regional airline Encore in the second half of the year. It will compete head-on with Air Canada on some routes to smaller cities and towns where Canada's biggest airline has enjoyed a monopoly.

Saretsky said WestJet will release on February 11 the schedule for Encore's initial two aircraft, which will be delivered in June. From August on, Encore will take delivery of one aircraft a month until the end of the year and schedules for those planes will be announced as they arrive.

WestJet's fourth-quarter earnings rose 71 percent to C$60.9 million, or 46 Canadian cents a share. That was ahead of analysts' average expectations of earnings of 42 Canadian cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue increased 10 percent to C$860.6 million, while its load factor, the percentage of available seats filled with paying customers, rose to 81.9 percent for the quarter from 78.7 percent a year earlier.

The Calgary-based company raised its quarterly dividend by 25 percent to 10 Canadian cents a share. It also announced a plan to buy back up to 5 percent of its outstanding shares.

WestJet expects a moderate rise in revenue per available seat mile, a measure of an airline's profitability based on its per seat earnings, and margin expansion in the current quarter.

It also expects its 2013 costs per available seat mile to rise by 2 percent to 3 percent year over year, excluding fuel and employee profit-sharing costs.

(This February 6 story corrects to replace reference to disappointing outlook. Replaces revenue with RASM in paragraph 3 and 6. Removes reference to revenue being flat by Q4 in paragraph 3. Adds RASM definition in paragraph 4.)

The 9 Craziest Work Late Excuses

While heavy traffic might be the most common reason for showing up late for work, it's certainly not the most outlandish, new research finds.

A study by online career site CareerBuilder reveals that frozen car keys and bear attacks top this year's listof the most outrageous excuses for arriving to work late. Among the other more memorable excuses hiring managers heard from tardy employees in the past year included:

  • Employee dropped her purse into a coin-operated newspaper box and couldn't retrieve it without change (which was in the purse).
  • Employee accidentally left the apartment with his roommate's girlfriend's shoes on and had to go back to change.
  • Employee's angry wife had frozen his truck keys in a glass of water in the freezer.
  • Employee got a late start because she was putting a raincoat on her cement duck in her front yard (because rain was expected later that day).
  • Employee's car wouldn't start because the Breathalyzer showed he was intoxicated.
  • Employee attempted to cut his own hair before work and the clippers stopped working, so he had to wait until the barbershop opened to fix his hair.
  • A bear attacked an employee's car (had photographic evidence).
  • Employee drove to her previous employer by mistake.
  • Employee claimed to have delivered a stranger's baby on the side of the highway.

Overall, more than a quarter of workers admitted to being late at least once a month, with 16 percent showing up past their scheduled starting time at least once a week.

"Employers understand that every now and again circumstances will arise that are out of a worker's control and unfortunately cause a late arrival to work," said Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources at CareerBuilder. "It escalates to a problem when the behavior becomes repetitive, causing employers to take disciplinary action."?

The study found that more than one-third of hiring managers have had to fire someone for their lateness.

The research was based on surveys of more than 2,600 hiring managers and more than 3,900 workers nationwide.
