Society to be dismantled following Savile scandal

Broadcasting House of Horrors

The government has announced plans to end society as we know it, starting with scrapping the license fee, abolishing the welfare state and banning so-called ?grooming products? like shampoo.

When a blank slate has been achieved Rupert Murdoch will assume the role of emperor, presiding over a nation where paedophilia is impossible because free will is banned and physical contact between humans punishable by death.

David Cameron said: ?Our society is irredeemably corrupt. Even seemingly innocuous things like seat belt laws really are about restraining children for the benefit of predators.

?In order to protect children and ensure this can never happen again, Britain will become the state of Ruponia, where sexual urges can only be indulged vicariously via ?celebrity nipple slip? pictures in newspapers.

?Reproduction will happen via test tubes, freeing up your valuable time for working and consuming.?

Rupert Murdoch said, ?With all state assets transferring to the hands of private corporations, no longer will rich and powerful men be able to manipulate ordinary, vulnerable people to their own, immoral ends.

?At News International, we have always thought first and foremost of the children.?

2 convicted of massive asbestos dumping

Department of Justice

Some 60 million pounds of construction debris was dumped on this farm in Frankfort, N.Y.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Where to dump 60 million pounds of demolition debris, much of it containing asbestos? How about an upstate New York farm that also has wetlands and runs along a river? That act led to the conviction this week of two men who now face years in prison and hefty fines.?

A jury on Tuesday found Cross Nicastro, owner of the 28-acre farm on the Mohawk River in Frankfort, and Dominick Mazza, owner of a waste management company, guilty?of violating the Clean Water Act.

The debris came from New Jersey rubbish that was put through an industrial shredding machine without the asbestos first being removed.

The defendants "flouted numerous federal laws designed to protect Americans from exposure to toxic materials when they dumped asbestos-contaminated waste into an area that included sensitive wetlands," Assistant U.S. Attorney General Ignacia Moreno?said in a statement.

"They also committed fraud and lied to federal investigators in the process," she added.

The two were also convicted of violating the Superfund law?s requirement to report the release of toxic materials and obstructing justice.

Mazza was also convicted of making false statements to special agents with the Environmental Protection Agency. ? ? ?

The men "concealed the illegal dumping by fabricating a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) permit and forging the name of a DEC official on the fraudulent permit," the Justice Department stated.

Mazza's company also "obstructed justice by destroying and concealing documents responsive to a grand jury subpoena."

Investigators were tipped off by a dump truck driver who was suspicious about what was happening at the farm.

Department of Justice

Some of the construction debris found on the farm in Frankfort, N.Y.

Syracuse.com cited?Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Benedict as saying that when agents arrived they found bicycle marks atop the flattened debris piles, indicating local children had been using it as a playground.

Some 430 loads were dumped, Benedict said, and evidence showed the plan was to go on for another five years.

Nicastro faces up to five years in prison and fines, while Mazza could see up to 20 years in prison due to the obstruction of justice conviction.

A sentencing date for the men has yet to be set.?

Three others had previously been convicted for their role in the dumping, which happened in 2006.

Nicastro planned to eventually convert the site into commercial riverfront property, Benedict said.

CNN: Obama spoke longer; Romney spoke more

(AP) ? President Barack Obama spoke longer in the first two presidential debates, but rival Mitt Romney spoke more.

CNN said Thursday that Romney spoke more words in both debates than Obama, even though the network's on-air clock showed Obama had more speaking time. Some of the Republican candidate's supporters had questioned why the president had been given more time.

During the first debate, Obama spoke for 42 minutes, 50 seconds, compared to 38:32 for Romney. But CNN said Romney got in 7,802 words and Obama spoke 7,294 words.

Same thing during Tuesday's debate: Obama's time count was 44:04 and Romney's 40:50. Romney said 7,984 words and Obama 7,506.

CNN said the count was done by a computer program.

Lytro camera getting parallax effect and 3D display support, lands in Hong Kong (video)

Lytro light field camera on pool cue

Lytro isn't done extending the usefulness of its light field camera just because we have manual controls. Another update due by the end of the year will take advantage of that focus-independent sensor to allow a parallax-based 3D effect in photos: invoke a 'full' focus in reviewing shots and you can start poking around the scene in a limited way without having ever touched a dual-sensor camera. Appropriately, we're also getting support for examining photos on 3D monitors and TVs that emphasize the added depth. The promised features come hand-in-hand with Lytro's immediate availability in Hong Kong, where 8GB blue and gray cameras are selling for $3,888 HKD ($502 US) and the 16GB red model goes for $4,688 HKD ($605). Check out our Chinese crew's eyes-on look at the parallax effect in a video after the break.

Surf guitarist Dick Dale's son, ex-wife arrested

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (AP) ? The son and ex-wife of 1960s "King of the Surf Guitar" Dick Dale were arrested after they allegedly blew up a propane tank in a Southern California desert town.

Jill Monsour, 45, and James Monsour, 20, were arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive device in public. They remained jailed Tuesday on $500,000 bail each, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department website. District attorney spokesman Chris Lee said prosecutors were still reviewing the case and no charges had been filed.

The Monsours were arrested at about 3:30 a.m. Monday near Dale's isolated home in Wonder Valley, radio station KCDZ-FM reported.

Investigators determined that the Monsours placed a 5-gallon tank of propane atop a burning woodpile and then shot it with a gun, causing it to explode, the station reported.

Dale, whose birth name is Richard Monsour, said he was shocked when a neighbor told him about the arrests after hearing about them on the radio.

The musician, who is remarried, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he has had no contact with his ex-wife for 12 years and only rarely sees his son, who occasionally plays drums at Dale's concerts.

"When he needs money he comes to me," Dale said. "That's the only time I see him.

Dale, who said he is fighting cancer and other illnesses, added that his medical expenses make it impossible for him to provide bail for his son and ex-wife.

It was not immediately clear whether his son would be able to perform with him on a concert tour scheduled for November and December.

"He wanted to do this tour, but if they're in jail, what can be done?" Dale asked.

Dale, 75, is known as a surf music pioneer and influence on such other performs as Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

His pounding, hard-charging electric guitar sound can be heard on such 1960s hits as "Let's Go Trippin'" and "Misirlou." The latter song was introduced to a new generation when Quentin Tarantino used it in his 1994 movie "Pulp Fiction."

Magic Finger turns everything into a touch surface

1 hr.

Practically every phone and laptop coming out these days has a touchscreen, a touchpad, or both ? but this "Magic Finger" device lets you treat any surface as touchable, from your desk to your own skin.

There are already mobile mice that track easily on any surface, but this experimental device, built by researchers at the Universities of Toronto and Alberta, has a few more tricks up its sleeve. It uses a small camera to optically track the surface it's on, which means it can be used as a mouse, but it also has a second, more high-definition camera.

The second camera gets a good look at what the device is touching, and can recognize almost two dozen different textures and respond accordingly. Check your email by touching your shirt, or create a blank document by touching a sheet of paper ? or combine this recognition factor with other gestures to enable all kinds of actions. Move your finger up or down on the desk to adjust?your music's volume, for instance, or left and right to change the track.

And that's not all: the camera can also recognize tiny patterns like miniature QR codes, essentially allowing buttons and actions to be printed on to paper or stickers. And the team has a number of other potential applications, which they detail in this video:

At the moment the device is still very much just a prototype, and as you can see in the pictures and video, it must be hard-wired to a second device in order to function. But with devices like Google Glass able to pack lots of functionality into a small package, a self-contained version of the Magic Finger isn't hard to imagine.

The research was presented at the UIST conference in Cambridge, and is?a product of Autodesk Research. You can read more or download the paper itself (with many additional pictures and documentation) at the project's webpage.
