Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 brings an NVIDIA Kepler GPU to the ultrabook party

Acer unveiled several new Ultrabooks at CeBIT last week (we spent time with the V5 and V3) but its M3 may be the most special one of all. NVIDIA mentions it will not only be the first with a discrete GPU -- beating Lenovo's T430u to the punch -- but that the included GeForce GT640M is based on the long-awaited 28nm Kepler architecture. That should give it enough power to run the latest games while still remaining true to the ultrabook tag with a 20mm thick frame and (promised) 8 hours of battery life thanks to Optimus technology. The 15-inch Aspire Timeline M3 Ultra also breaks the mold by squeezing in a DVD drive for games you can't get from Steam, along with options for either a hybrid hard drive / SSD or SSD-only storage setup. Neither company has included a pricetag in their joyful announcements, but these no-compromise packages are expected to begin shipping later this month.

OnLive for iPad is improperly licensed - Microsoft

OnLive, a company that recently began offering hosted Windows and Office software remotely from its servers to iPad and Android tablet users, is in violation of Microsoft licensing rules, according to a Microsoft official.

"We are actively engaged with OnLive with the hope of bringing them into a properly licensed scenario, and we are committed to seeing this issue is resolved," wrote Joe Matz, Microsoft's corporate vice president of Worldwide Licensing and Pricing, in a blog post.

In January, OnLive launched OnLive Desktop, a free cloud service that offers its subscribers "a seamless" Windows desktop experience and "full-featured" Office applications, as described by the company's CEO Steve Pearlman in a blog post at the time.

Originally available only for the iPad, OnLive Desktop now also works on Android tablets and the company plans to add support for more platforms. Fee-based versions of OnLive Desktop add more features, such as accelerated browsing, additional storage and Flash support.

The service got a boost in popularity when The New York Times' tech columnist David Pogue wrote about it in late February, which prompted a surge in sign-ups as well as grumblings from other Microsoft desktop-as-a-service partners that felt OnLive was skirting licensing rules.

Days later, Gartner analyst Michael Silver and two colleagues warned IT managers that it was unclear whether OnLive Desktop complies with Microsoft licensing agreements and to take precautionary steps before allowing employees to use it, chief among them meeting with their Microsoft account team to get written guidance about licensing issues.

"In Gartner's view, if Microsoft were to conclude that OnLive is misusing its products, Microsoft could potentially take action against OnLive that could affect OnLive's ability to service clients. Gartner believes that there's also a risk that Microsoft could hold both OnLive and its customers responsible for any potential mislicensing," Silver and his co-authors wrote on Feb. 29.

Microsoft remained mum about the issue until Matz's post, published on Thursday afternoon, in which he outlined how partners and outsourcers can use Windows 7 Clients on hosted server platforms to deliver desktops as a service while complying with their licenses.

According to Matz, customers can have a partner host Windows 7 in a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure for them, as long as the customer has licensed the software directly from Microsoft. "The hosting hardware must be dedicated to, and for the benefit of the customer, and may not be shared by or with any other customers of that partner," he wrote.

Another valid scenario allows partners that have entered into the Services Provider License Agreement to provide "some desktop-like" functionality to any customer, even those that haven't licensed the software directly from Microsoft. The software involved is Windows Server and Remote Desktop Services.

However, partners aren't allowed to provide Windows 7 as a hosted client or Office as a service through Windows 7. "Office may only be provided as a service if it is hosted on Windows Server and Remote Desktop Services," he wrote.

Asked for comment, an OnLive spokeswoman said on Friday via email that the company's position is that "we have never commented on any licensing agreements."

March Is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March Is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Belleville, IL (PRWEB) March 08, 2012

Nearly 150,000 Americans are diagnosed each year with colon cancer. According to the national Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA), it is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. A colorectal cancer diagnosis does not automatically mean you are eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, according to Allsup, a nationwide provider of SSDI representation. However, if your condition or treatments make it impossible for you to work, you should determine your eligibility and apply as soon as possible. During National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, the nation calls attention to the disease, and Allsup offers advice to individuals facing the challenges that often accompany it.

Screening for Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is up to 90 percent preventable. A screening every 10 years starting at age 50 greatly reduces risk, according to the CCA. A family history of colon cancer also is an indicator that calls for regular screenings. The sooner the cancer is detected, the more effective the treatment. Symptoms don?t generally appear until its later stages, which underscores the need for regular screenings, according to the CCA. Colon cancer symptoms include a change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, constant abdominal discomfort and fatigue.

?Colorectal cancer is the No. 2 killer of men and women combined,? said Nancy Butterfield, patient engagement coordinator with the CCA. ?The education is still not there?even among some physicians.? The CCA seeks to bring attention to the disease throughout March. More information is available at http://www.ccalliance.org.

Social Security Disability and Colon Cancer Claims

Individuals with colon cancer may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits if they are unable to work for 12 months or longer because of their condition.

?As with any determination, the Social Security Administration follows guidelines that at any point may result in denial of SSDI benefits or advance the application to the next level,? said Allsup senior claimant representative Ed Swierczek. ?The review determines the applicant?s ability to continue working.?

SSDI is a federally mandated disability insurance program that operates separately from the retirement and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. SSDI provides monthly benefits to individuals who are under full retirement age (age 65 or older) and who can no longer work because of a disability (injury, illness or condition) that is expected to last for more than 12 months or is terminal. Individuals must have paid FICA taxes to be eligible.

Swierczek outlined five steps the SSA takes in evaluating colorectal cancer claims:

Step 1: ?If the individual still works and will make $ 1,010 a month this year, the SSA denies his claim,? Swierczek said.

Step 2: If the claimant doesn?t have a severe impairment, he is denied at this step.

Step 3: If the claimant meets a medical listing?s qualifications, his case is approved and paid. If not, he moves to the next step.

Step 4: Can the claimant still perform his past line of work? If so, the case is denied. If not, it moves to the next step.

Step 5: Does the claimant have the capacity to perform other work? ?It?s at this step that age, education and past relevant work are considered,? Swierczek said. ?If the finding is ?unable to do work,? the case is paid. But if he is able to do other work, it is denied.?

Expert Help for Social Security Disability

According to Swierczek, many factors are involved during the SSDI process, and one of the biggest is medical history. ?Frankly, it?s difficult and frustrating to go through the process if you don?t have professional expertise on your side,? he said. ?That?s why we at Allsup guide our customers through the entire process. Whether you are applying for SSDI initially or have already been denied, we can become your advocate and apply our knowledge and expertise, giving you the best opportunity of being awarded your Social Security benefits.?

Making Your Online Customer Service Work

Being there for your customers on a regular basis should be your first priority. If you don?t treat your customers right, you invariably halt your own business from growing. So make sure you don?t overlook the customer service aspect of your business. If you?re running an internet business, you?ll have to focus on having customer service that?s web based. Good customer service can make all the difference when it comes to how your customers perceive you whether or not they return. This is how successful businesses build momentum and gain a great reputation online. If you want to improve your online customer service, there are a few crucial steps you must take. In this article, we?ll be exploring some of the ways you can achieve this. Master Cleanse Secrets

Every once in a while you hear a great idea, and that is why you should occasionally ask those who use your processes for suggestions. Most businesses use the simple form, but there are other methods that can work very well. Generally speaking, there will not be a lot of folks who will make suggestions. Remember that you will have chances to shine and let people know how committed you are to their satisfaction. Illusion Mage Part of high quality customer service is having the right tools at your disposal. Whether it?s implementing an online chat support system or a knowledge base. The most efficient system will mean fewer delays and problems for anyone needing help. Your customers will be happy to deal with you when they see you being so organized. Not only this, by investing in the right technology, you will cut down on your own time that you spend on customer service. You should also aim for simplicity, so that your customer service isn?t frustrating or difficult to use. PS3 Lights Fix

Your website needs to have a valid search function besides having various ways to contact you, you shouldn?t ignore the importance of helping your customers on your website. If people can quickly find helpful information, then that will save both them and you time. A time saving device is what this will become for you if you have a good one that is easy to see. This not only helps your current customers but also your prospects. So, do not neglect even the easiest device you can put into place because you never know what the outcome will be. Your online customer service is just as important as the quality of your products and your marketing strategies. Customers who feel well treated are the kind who return and recommend you to others. This is one of the secrets to having a business that consistently grows and that has customers who frequently come back. Always keep in mind that your business is successful because of your customers. Without them it would be nothing and you wouldn?t be anywhere. With the right online customer service, you can make your customers feel appreciated. Make it as easy as you can for them to seek help from you.

Wisconsin man among four presumed dead off Washington coast

CREATED 4:17 PM

SEATTLE - The Coast Guard has released the names of four people presumed dead after their fishing trawler disappeared off the Washington coast after sending a distress signal.

Twenty-five year old Chris Langel of Kaukauna, Wisconsin is among the missing.

The other three men are identified as 42-year-old Dave Nickels and 38-year-old Jason Bjaranson of Warrenton, Oregon and 19-year-old Luke Jensen of Ilwaco, Washington.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for the men Sunday.

Petty Officer Shawn Eggert says crews in Coast Guard cutters and a helicopter covered more than 1,300 square miles since the 70-foot Lady Cecelia sent a distress signal early Saturday. He says they've now searched longer than anyone might have survived in the water.

Rescue crews searched through the night after finding debris, an empty lifeboat and an oil sheen several miles off the coast.

The search was called off before midday Sunday.

Theory on possible Anonymous Internet blackout

21 hrs.

If Anonymous is able to blackout the Web on March 31, as the buzz goes, then one likely way they'll do it is to disable the Internet's "phone book" -- its Domain Name System, which converts domain names into IP addresses.

Ars Technica describes, in great detail, how the loosely organized, international group of hacktivists responsible for denial of service attacks big and small could use a technique called DNS amplification to take us back to 1992.

Recently, Anonymous has had a streak of hits, including a revenge attack on Panda Security, which members of the hacking group falsely believed helped authorities rein in six LulzSec members, and a recent attack on the Vatican's website. Previous targets included the CIA, an FBI cybersecurity partner and several law enforcement sites around the country.? This Technolog report goes in-depth about the very real possibility of a power grid shutdown, quoting from the NSA chief.?

Anonymous' usual MO is to overload websites with access requests, so a DNS amplification could be seen as a mega-version of that approach, as described by Ars Technica:

DNS amplification hijacks an integral part of the Internet?s global address book, turning a relatively small stream of requests from attacking machines into a torrent of data sent to the target machines, potentially delivering network traffic of tens or hundreds of gigabytes per second without revealing the source of the attack. It does so by using a vulnerability in the DNS service that's been known since at least 2002.

Using these two things?recursive lookups that return large amounts of data to small queries, and spoofed source addresses?attacks can be made. The attacker first finds a server that is configured to enable recursive lookups. He then sends a large number of requests to the server, spoofing the source address so that the server thinks that the victim machine is making the request. Each of these requests is chosen so that it generates a large response, much larger than the queries themselves. The server will then send these large responses to the victim machine, inundating it with traffic. The disparity between the request size and the response is why these attacks are known as "amplification" attacks.

Whatever comes next, it doesn't look like Anonymous is going to let up anytime soon. Consider this March 8 tweet, from @YourAnonNews: "War is our imperative. And if right now victory seems like an impossibility, then we have something else to reach for: revenge, payback."
